when Questbridge bills itself at low income families ($20000-$60000 a year) - are they including the income of non-custodial parents?

Yes. Unless you have had no contact with that parent for an extended period of time, in which case you get a waiver and the NC parent’s income is not considered. But this is when there really is no relationship and no support. Otherwise it’s both parents’ income.

Yes - the income of the non-custodial parent is counted, but not the non-custodial parent’s spouse.

my father keeps insisting that i keep his name off the records, but i am, obviously, in contact with him, and i don’t want to lie. financial aid is calculated based on what your parents can pay, not what they’re willing to pay, right?

would you guys have any advice on what i should do or what i should tell him?

Well, his co-operation is essential for you to fill out any forms for FA, not just QB. If you can explain how much is riding on this pretty simple thing he should tell you what you need to know. You’re not asking him for money, just information. Still, this happens a lot with QB. There are a couple applicants this year whose non-custodial parents don’t want file several years of back taxes (they would owe too much in taxes?!) and so the students are really stuck! If your mother has decent communication with your father, maybe she can explain the situation to him. Seems like he would be willing to help if he understands that you are trying to win scholarships to put yourself through college! Try to start slow - just get the numbers from him. Later, you can work on documentation; you don’t need the forms yet, you just need his financials. GL!!!

Tell him the information is required or you will not get any scholarships or financial aid. The purpose of the information is not for the IRS or to make him pay any money, but to determine how much scholarship they will give you. You have no choice in the matter to include him or you would be committing fraud.
