Hey guys,

I am planning on going to U of I and majoring in Molecular and Cellular Biology. I have heard from a lot of people that U of I is a HUGE party school, but I'm not interested in any of that sort of stuff. Is the atmosphere at U of I really heavy into that stuff, even if you're involved in the "hard sciences"? Is there a lot of pressure to drink/party? I don't plan on rushing or getting involved in Greek life, so I hope I won't be an outcast. Input would be great!

hey mednerd, I’m planning to major in MCB as well!(: I think since uiuc is such HUGE school with an enormous student population, even if u’re not into partying/ greek life( or at least not at the moment), u’ll still be able to find ur own niche n friends who shares same interest as u(:
Although I’m not exactly a party person, but i hoping to live in a dorm tt is both friendly/social, where i can meet ppl n make friends, and still be good for studying(not too much partying). Is there any dorm that has a good balance btwn work n play? Do anyone think allen hall is a good choice for me?

You’ll be fine, Mednerd. The “Party School” hype is way overblown. Have you visited U of I yet? Visit. Talk to other MCB students. Talk to MCB staff. You’ll find out soon enough that there is absolutely no pressure to drink, party, or get involved in the Greek scene at U of I.

If you can’t visit, ask MCB staff if they could put you in touch with a student or two, who can answer any questions you might have.

I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to visit the school and see for yourself. After all, if you’re contemplating spending the next four years of your life at U of I, you owe it to yourself to form your own opinions, after seeing the campus and the prevailing atmosphere up close and personal.
