Are there any good scholarships out there that you guys know about that aren't just essay contests? I'm a good writer, but for me, the time and effort spent in crafting an applicable essay just isn't worth the slim chance you might have of winning a teeny amount of money. I've tried fastweb and a couple other national scholarship searches, but all I get is essay contests!

I went through the SAME thing. To me, fastweb was pretty worthless. I'd say your best bet is to look for local awards. They aren't always a lot of money, but there are fewer people and the ones I came across either didn't have essays or they were easy 250 word ones.

Remember, for most scholarships you will need to write an essay about your accomplishments. Just be sure you answer the specific prompts. Most scholarsips are competitive, and if you have been active in your community and have a lot of service, then you should apply.

Most scholarships require an essay. The only legimate one that I know that doesn't require an essay is the Robert C. Byrd Scholarship.

Thanks! Especially metermaid, those help a lot!

elphaba88, will you apply for the Byrd Scholarship. The Byrd Scholarship is A LOT of money, and it's pretty easy to get if you have the grades and the test scores.

Each states' requirements are different for the Byrd. In some states it is as random as a lottery drawing. In our state it required not only the grades, but a student essay, 3 letters of recommendation, listing of accomplishments in 3 distinct catagories- community/ school service related- and to top it off spelling errors took away points and if the letters of rec. didn't specifically relate the student to the Byrd Scholarship, points were deducted according to the judging rubric provided. This was one of the most time consuming (and thankfully financially rewarding) scholarships D applied for. Check your states' requirements.

coptermom, what state do you reside?

We're in Colorado.

Weird. In Florida for the Byrd scholarship, one person is chosen by the administration at each school.

wow, I just looked up the Byrd scholarship. It looks really easy to get in my state, considering I have pretty high gpa and sat scores
