Non-Filer Letter

My mother doesn’t work and hasn’t notified the IRS that she makes no income. She also doesn’t have a SSN. Is it still possible for her to request a Verification of Non-filing Letter from the IRS?

Why doesn’t she have a SS number? Is she not a citizen?

What about your father? Are they married, and if so, did they file a joint return?

My parents are not married and no she’s not a citizen

Where was your mom in 2018?

If your mother has never filed a tax return here…and you say she has $0 income? How is she supporting you?

Do you live with both parents…or just your mom…or dad?

Does your mom live in the U.S.?

Are you a citizen?

My dad supports our family, and I’m a citizen

and yes she lives with us in the US

Request the letter and see what happens. Are you doing this for CSS? Does she have a tax id?

To the poster with spaces in their screen name…

The colleges require this non-filers statement. Has nothing to do with the Profile.

@kelsmom can someone without a SS number, who has not worked, who is not a citizen get a non-filers statement?

She does have an tax id, but I believe it’s expired

@happymomof1 can you help here?

@FoogGud is your mom here legally? Has she ever worked here?

Does your father live with you and your mother?

@kelsmom see post above…they all live together.

Yes she lives here illegally and no she’s never worked

Wouldn’t I tell my aid counselor I won’t be able to prove a non-filer letter due to my specific circumstances?

Sorry - hard to read on my phone!

Did you list both parents? Assuming you did, you would list your mom’s income on the verification worksheet as 0. Include a signed letter from your mother stating that she did not earn income, and that she does not have an SSN. If the school needs something else, they will contact you … watch for emails (in your student portal, if you have access to it).

If it makes you feel better, contact your financial aid advisor to explain the situation & ask what they want you to do.

Alright, thank you for the info
