Hello Everyone,

My son was not chosen as a finalist. His stats are 32 ACT, GPA 4.95 weighted, 18th out of 576, pretty good EC's (just not leadership positions), decent volunteering. Since November 1, he has had several schools contact him requesting that he apply even though he wasn't even chosen as a finalist (Dartmouth, Rice, Williams, Vassar and Carleton). Williams even extended the SAT subject testing for him so that he could still take it. Does this mean anything? Are they truly interested in him? Any input would be appreciated.

Are these schools also offering to waive the app fee?

Does it mean anything/are they interested? - Maybe. It’s worth pursuing if your son is interested in those schools and he can apply for free :-).

Yes, they all offered to waive the fee. My feeling was that if they contacted him, it must mean there is some level of interest. Rice already had his QB application when they contacted him (he didn’t have to put them on the RD forwarding list). They also extended the EA application deadline for him. He didn’t apply EA, but he is applying RD. Carleton and Vassar just said to e-mail them and they would reactivate the QB application.

I said the same thing to him about the free application. He already has the Common App completed, so it is just completing the supplements, none of which seem to cumbersome to complete.
