What are some non ivy rowing schools. Want to be sure to cover all the bases, and I know the Ivys are good schools for rowing - but without scholarships, we can't afford those. Duke, UVA, Ohio, Wisconsin, Boston University, Boston College.....what else should be on the list?

Bucknell
Delaware
Michigan
Michigan State
Cal
Florida schools (i think fit, ucf, miami have them)
Georgetown
Rochester

off the top of my head

Have you registered on berecruited.com? You can see all the schools that have rowing, by gender, and division. You can view all the schools in a state also,we found that really helpful. There is also info on each school and links to school and team websites. It is really a great resource.

stanford, ucal, ucla, texas, alabama, umass, Wisco, WashU, Indiana, most state schools… most schools in Boston, etc. I would start with schools you’re interested in, see if they’re D1, then go on the website. Most schools have rowing - balances out football.

Isn’t Univ. of Minnesota pretty good too?

A couple of points:
- The top three ivies offer extremely generous financial aid, making them frequently more affordable than in-state schools.
- Many/most freshmen won’t get a full ride at a top D1 rowing school.
- If your daughter is a top rower, I wouldn’t bother with berecruited.com Just pick 20 schools she’d be interested in and have her email the coaches.
- Consider what happens if your kid decides that she doesn’t want to row anymore and you’re stuck with the tuition bill. To spend 25+ hours/week and winter/spring break doing something she hates just for the money, may be pretty brutal.

Bucknell is actually not a “crew scholarship school,” in fact they offer NO athletic scholarships save for 3 mens/3 womens basketball. They are stingy with Financial Aid in general though they cost more than all Ivies except Harvard and Yale, which are more likely to offer FA. Bucknell made the Princeton Review list for colleges with the worst Financial Aid packages for a reason. Ask the Bucknell coach to get an Early Financial Read, at least a sculler will know going in what they won’t be getting.

Delaware’s Athletic Dept should be asked if/how budget cuts would affect crew especially for OOS.

University of Washington has a big team. They were one of the first schools from out west to come and compete with the Ivies.

Unless you’re a top rower, you can only expect money later on. So, if you continue with the team as a soph, jr, sr and maintain the skill/erg score to stay in a varsity/ncaa boat, then you’ll get money.

anothermom - what do you define as a top rower? What kind of erg scores put a rower in that category?

7:20’s at least I would say… but it depends on the team. Some teams will only give you money freshman year if you’re below 7:15, while others will give money to those in the 40’s… All depends!

Crew is more widespread now than just limited to the coasts.
We have unhampshire, boston u, northeastern, mit, rhode island, uconn, trinity, wesleyan, smith, wellesley, williams, amherst, syracuse, rochester, rutgers, probably uva & w&c, the 3 florida giants, uwisco, ucla, usc, ucal, possibly the claremont system, & washington state.
