Non-liberal arts major in an Honors College?

Hi,
I've recently been accepted into Wazzu's Honors College. I plan to major in Accounting and I noticed that most of the people in the Honors College right now are liberal arts majors, which is in no way surprising, but I'm wondering if it's really uncommon for a non-liberal arts major to be in an Honors College?

I applied to the Honors College because I wanted to surround myself with people who are focused on their studies, because I've had problems in high school hanging with the "wrong crowd" and my grades suffering as a result. I'm just wondering if it will be awkward for me, as a non-liberal arts major?

Hmm…in my honors college you see a lot more STEM majors. Honors college generally are not “segregated” by majors. The purpose of many honors colleges is to support and bring together talented students. No one is going to judge you based on your major.

Assuming you mean Washington State U here… In any event, the most common majors in honors colleges are liberal arts majors. A big factor in this starts with the observation that “honors colleges” are usually misnamed. They are not stand-alone colleges offering their own majors.

In fact they usually just offer a smattering of offerings, mostly aimed at frosh and soph levels. That’s because its easy to put together a class like “Germany Goes to the Movies: Watching Foreign Films as an Intercultural Experience” or “Case Study: Leadership Lessons from the European Renaissance” (2 actual WSU Honors offerings, BTW) that can be used to satisfy breadth requirements for a ton of liberal-arts majors. But nobody in your honors classes is going to care that you’re not a liberal-arts major.

Surround is a word you want to perhaps put in quotes. According to the page at [Honors College: Requirements](http://honors.wsu.edu/academics/requirements/index.html) you can expect the Honors material to satisfy about 1/4 to 1/3 of your overall WSU experience. The rest of your classes will be taken with the ordinary WSU students in their ordinary classes. Including, I’m willing to bet, each and every one of your accounting classes.

Thank you both for responding so quickly.

I’m trying to decide whether Honors College is worth it or not and your input has helped me.

@mikemac, by “surround” I guess I was referring to living in the Honors College Hall. But thank you for clarifying just how much of my experience will have to do with Honors.

Depends on school…look at course offerings. At Ds honors program business is big and there are lots of honors sections of accounting, econ, etc. She has been happy with the smart, ambitious kids she has met in her honors dorm…but there are still honors students who party or smoke, etc…just like everywhere else.
