Ok everybody, here it goes… After putting it all together I’m pretty sure I know how this crazy, yet very simple system works. First of all, my stats…
Major: Psychology
GPA: 3.2
AA-T/AS-T?: Yes
Pre-reqs: Completed
Golden 4: Done
SD Area?: No, Orange County (Based on 100% local status, only 30% local)
ACCEPTED!!! crazy right? actually not so much.
To try and answer some of your questions and to prepare future applicants that come across this site, let me explain.
I completed most of my general Ed at Santa Ana College in Orange County (non-SDSU local) before transferring to Grossmont College in SD. There, I completed 31 units mostly Major prep. and graduated with an ADT in Psychology. For all who think they get a .1 boost in your GPA, if that’s true, it would be because the CC you transfer from does not offer enough major prep. courses that they hook up a boost to compete. I will explain more later. You all can find individual major prep courses at assist dot org by typing in your transferring from and intended to transfer schools and you will see what is offered at your CC. Look at your local University, then look at SDSU.
For Psych majors, SDSU requires you complete all or most of these:
Psychology 101, 201, 211, 230, 260, 280, and Biology 100
What an ADT does is that it requires you to complete some extra major prep. courses, usually 3-5 more.
Psych ADT requires:
Psychology 101, 120, 205, 215, 140, 138, 150, and 170.
Therefore an ADT forces you to take the mandatory classes needed to transfer to your local University.
Based on the community college your graduate from with your ADT, SDSU or and University will know exactly which classes you were offered and how similar they are.
The ADT essentially is the University’s secret tool to know exactly how similar the courses you took for your ADT are to their courses offered and if you will need to retake any.
If courses offered at a CC are nothing like SDSU’s or not offered at all, I assume they may give a .1 GPA boost but I don’t see any other reason a boost would make sense and not be unfair to Naturally-high GPA earners.
At Grossmont I completed all identical classes offered at SDSU:
Psychology 101, 120, 205, 215, 140, 138, 150, 170, 201, 220
plus Biology 239, 249 (at Santa Ana College)
As you can see it makes perfect sense that I was accepted since I am now 1/3 done with my Bachelors degree with all the classes I took. I only need 53 Units to graduate with a Bachelor’s in Psychology, minor in communication and minor in counseling. I literally am almost done.
What a University’s main goal is to accept students that have either completed some, most and all very similar classes to the ones offered at their school. They are also looking for applicants with high GPA and potential.
If a student is non-local and the prep courses are not similar to SDSU’s, like they are at your local University, they may consider you if you have a high GPA or show promise of being a successful student at their school. So for those non-locals who were accepted, it is most likely because you have done some extra in terms of major prep, GPA, etc.
There is absolutely no random drawing for acceptances or whatever people were saying. That’s just silly.
Having said that, it only explains the academic portion of this system. Now, you have to figure out how my people the University accepts on average every year, in YOUR MAJOR. Each major has vastly different amounts of people being accepted and if you search Analytic Studies & Institutional Research-Applicants by major SDSU, you can see all that info. To be honest, I got lucky because hundreds of people get accepted, but thousands apply. In other majors, 10-80 may apply, and 3-30 might get accepted. Time to do your own research.
Now you can put it all together and have a better idea of if and why you are/will be accepted or denied
I hope this came out as clear as I can think it. I’m sure I forgot some minor details but I’ll add if I remember. It makes perfect sense to me lol, but I’m always open to disagreements or thoughts. I cannot promise to respond right away, I work a lot. Feel free to message me if you want for more detailed information or website names, etc.
