Non-Michigan Residents Tuition Increased!!

According to the office of the registrar (<a href="http://www.umich.edu/%7Eregoff/tuition/full.html)%5B/url%5D">http://www.umich.edu/~regoff/tuition/full.html)</a>, effective on fall 2008, the tuition of Non-Michigan Residents will be $16,440 per term for full-time undergraduates. This means an increase of $790 with respect to the current tuition rate (of $15650.69 per term).

The finanacial aid of every students was calculated with the figures of last year, which means that this increased is not considered in the calculation of the financial aid. Now this year my parents need to pay $1,580 more to the amount previous calculated by the office of financial aid.

Um...tuition rates always go up from year to year.

stimulus check?

I would like to find out the breakdown between tuition and fees. Maybe there will be information on the Financial Aid Dept web site when they get around to modifying the "cost of attendance."

Man, this is high-way robbery. I am thinking about going to the lowest meal-plan and getting a triple economy room just so i can minimize costs. Thanks, Board of Regants, I will eat less and cramp up at night just to pay my tuition bills. Don't the *ing Democrats run the show in Michigan! Aren't they supposedly for accessible education for all! The students at Michigan's three biggest universities (Wayne, MSU and U-M) should petition to get a tuition freeze. That, or the state should start pouring more money into the only jewel in the *hole which is the state of Michigan, U of M!

Man, I am Canadian (live an hours drive from Ann Arbor) and U of M (which I have long dreamed of attending) is making me pay a ridiculous out of state tuition rate in addition to denying me (and all other international students) a cent of financial aid. It's a farce when Michigan trumpets diversity. There may be a racial and religious diversity on campus, but I hardly doubt there is much socioeconomic diversity. The only reason I am going is because my dad is a neurosurgeon. I was an above average, underachiever in high school (SAT: 1960) and many of my more qualified peers dreamed of going to Michigan but just can't afford it and so they are going to Wayne State U. (when some of them are ivy league material). This is because Wayne State U. has a good neighbor policy which gives in-state tuition to residents of the 519 area code in Ontario. That is social justice and an affirmation of diversity.

That sucks...Still cheaper than my old school though.

how do we pay for tuition?

and how much is due on August 31st, 08?

desperate need of an answer.... thankss

wait
if your dad is a neurosurgeon he should have no problem paying the hefty bill. ;)

Living an hour away from Michigan and living 20 hours away makes zero difference. You don't pay taxes in the state of Michigan. In-state folks do, and often have for decades.

For out of state students, Michigan still charges less tuition than most of its peers. In-state students have nothing to complain about.

"underachiever in high school (SAT: 1960)" ..dude...i got 1810 ....its not all about SAT scores and all..they look at GPA and other stuff too...don't call yourself an underachiever...i got in with an SAT of 1810 but I had a GPA of 4.0 ....you probably have more or less the same...SATs aren't everything..people don't get that yet! :)
i'm OOS so im ****ed about tuition as well :(

"if your dad is a neurosurgeon he should have no problem paying the hefty bill."
True. He has the money put away for my education. But dude, undergrad at U of M plus a graduate degree (like an MD) at another elite school may run up to half a mil. If that money was in his retirement it would mean something to 25K a year , extra, in his pension. Thats two vacations a year for my parents, forever. So while he'll gladly spend on his son, i'm depriving my parents of more luxury. They have a nice retirement plan already, but that's besides the point.

You OOS people make me laugh. Do any of you plan on staying IN state after graduation? I'd say the answer would be approximately 0%.

"That, or the state should start pouring more money into the only jewel in the ****hole which is the state of Michigan, U of M!"

These kinds of comments are why tuition should increase for OOS students every year! Why should taxpayers in Michigan care about people who have such contempt for their home state? Furthermore, why should we subsidize them at all? If Michigan is such a "****hole" then i suggest you stay in Ontario and attend a provincial college there.

While UM is a good school, I cannot justify the amount I'm paying as an OOS student. Good thing is, only 3 more semesters to go for me. :)

Getting a degree as an OOS is a total rip-off. If only I wasn't classified as an international student by Rutgers I would have gone there.

Doesn't that depend on your major?
