Non-MT majors in shows and classes?

How much can students in other majors be involved in the MT productions and classes? My son would likely be in voice or music ed; he loves MT but not enough to major in it. Are the classes and shows open to others?

Non-majors cannot participate in any of the productions within the drama department. However, there is a group called The First Year Players that allows non-majors to perform in a musical. I'm not entirely sure how it works, because freshmen drama majors aren't allowed to perform anywhere for the first year. That said, I wouldn't come to Syracuse if you want to do a lot of shows without majoring in drama or MT.

In my opinion, for a student who wants to major in something else but be involved in musical theater on campus, it is better to attend a school with a very active theater scene that does not have a BFA program. By attending a school wtih a BFA in MT program, the chances to be in shows is going to be much slimmer for a student like yours (not just referring to Syracuse). There are many schools out there where students of any major can be in musicals, take some theater classes, etc. I know nothing of your son's qualifications but just as examples of what I mean.....two schools I know very well have musicals that any student can be in....Tufts and Brown. But this is true at many other schools that do not have BFA in MT programs on campus. Check out the theater options on campus for non majors at schools you are considering. I would think Syracuse is not the greatest option for your son given what you just wrote.

soozievt, Any other schools besides Tufts and Brown that do musicals for kids with average grades?
