I remember reading somewhere, that a certain number of applicates get in without getting an nomination from their congressman/senator. Is this true, and if so, how many?

Yes, they get noms from the supe, etc. The # is very small as I recall. Maybe 50 or so. Don't waste time worrying about that one though unless he's your dutch uncle. good luck.

Those rare candidate that recieve an LOA from the academy, but no nomination from their congressman are the ones who usually recieve supe. nominations.

You may find this information in the USNA catalog, either at your guidance counselor's offices, through your BGO, or online throught the USNA website at: http://www.usna.edu/Catalog/2005-2006admissionsbb.pdf

Your BGO will be your very best source of information on this topic.

All the best in your quest.

Your BGO "may" be your best source. Ours had no clue about this. Hope yours is terrific. Good luck. Go get 'em.

As a BGO, I've seen it happen once in 6 yrs and I'm not sure I could explain why it happened for this particular candidate as opposed to others whom I would consider equally deserving.

Bottom line -- it's very, very, very rare and there is really nothing you can do to make it happen for you other than move through your application and nom process along with everyone else. If it happens, be very thankful. Very.

a sponsor brother of mine got a nomination from a Congressional Medal of Honor winner, if i recall correctly, so i know it does happen.

^^^^^
Nominations for Congressional Medal of Honor (CMOH) recipients is a separate category and is restricted to the sons and daughters of those who have received the medal.

From the USNA catalog:
[quote]
Children of Medal of Honor Recipients
Candidates in this special category who are fully qualified for admission are
automatically appointed. There is no limit to the number of midshipmen with this
source of nomination.
