Can someone who attends GW please give a breakdown of freshman dorms at GW? Like which ones hold the partiers, cleanest, most space, etc... The website gives politically correct descriptions, but I think most perspective students want to know the ins and outs. Also include drinking policies, strict/laid back. PLEASE it would be a lot of help :)

For starters, drinking isn’t allowed in any dorm, but you can easily get away with it expect if health services randomly checks your building and you left your alcohol out.

Lots of parties in thurston, obvi. Potomac and the dorms on the vern are really clean. Somers, West Hall, madison and some rooms in thurston are really big. Potomac varies. There’s 24/7 front desk security in thurston and potomac but most of them are really nice and if you talk to them enough, some may turn a blind eye if you stumble into the building drunk. Thurston is really social and so is potomac depending on the floor. if you go to april visit, try and contact someone you know there (hopefully a freshman) so they can show you rooms of various sizes because the rooms they showed of potomac and thurston were kind of small and my room in potomac was twice the size of what I saw.

Thanks! What would be considered the “best” freshman dorm, in terms of location/style/up-datedness?

I’ve heard that Potomac is without-a-doubt the best one to choose for freshmen.

I know that’s the one I’d choose anyway. Madison’s location is nice and all, but I’ve heard it looks a little run-down, and I really need my room to be newer and cleaner.

What about West Hall on the Vern?
It’s new and amazing, but is living on the Vern really that much as a sacrifice as so many people say?

Umm I’d say potomac but I’m biased because I live here. It’s close to thurston, U-Yard and like two blocks from the frat houses. The rooms can be a little small but it really depends on what you get because mine is pretty big. It’s like 3-4ish blocks from the Marvin Center/J street/Gelman but really … does it make a difference? and there’s a study room on the 2nd floor and the ground floor. It was built in 2006 so the rooms are still pretty new.

I really havent heard much about Madison and I’ve never been inside but all I can say is it’s right across the street from Gelman, down 2 blocks from HelWell/Ivory on one side and from CVS on the other, 3 blocks from the metro and one block from whole foods. As for living conditions, no idea. But I’ve heard the rooms can be pretty big.

Crawford is being torn down so disregard it.

West is niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice! haha but really. Pelham (it’s like the Vern’s J street) is down stairs and so is the gym. It also takes J street money and although it kinda has less variety (and no auntie annes … what?), I like their food better and I always go there since I work on the Vern. Honestly, I wouldn’t live on the Vern just for west because all on my classes are on foggy and so much goes on here but the shuttle can be really quick sometimes! And if you get stuck on the vern, you can always room swap. my two friends actually just got into rooms in thurston today and they lived in Somers all of last semester. HOWEVER, if you really want a new dorm and nice rooms, West is the one and Potomac is second just because it’s like 4 years older.

So for convenience Madison is the one… Awesome. But I’m regular decision, so do you think I’ll still be able to get in? Because i know regular decision gets last priority.

I’m an ED1 student, so you may want to disregard this. Sorry it’s long.

I was reading an article in the hatchet, from a few years ago, and dorms on Foggy Bottom are definitely tight. It said that after all of the ED1 and ED2 had chosen dorms, there were only 2 doubles left on Foggy Bottom that needed filled. We’ve had a few housing rearrangements since then, but I doubt your odds are that good. However, you can (and should) still list Madison as your #1 choice. Also, it’s worth noting that Madison is still considered the Athlete’s dorm, considering its close proximity to the student gym.

Other than that, if you’re really unhappy wtih the dorm you get put in, GW does have a room transfer service that opens up 3 weeks in to the school year.

Lastly, I’d like to put in a word for Lafayette. It’s just as well located as Madison, a small dorm, and it’s the newest renovated dorm on campus. I’ve heard it’s beautiful. That’s all. ^^

What are the stereotypes of students in Thurston? Potomac? and Lafayette?

I’m a preppy party kid, who has ADD, but wants a “fun” dorm… I am down for a crazy time too

Which of the three would you suggest for me.
