<p>How much work does running a non-profit organization really take for a high school teenager? </p>
<p>I am seriously considering starting a non-profit, but I want to know about all the nuts and bolts before I take any action. </p>

<p>I started a non-profit girls’ basketball league. If you keep it on a low-scale (community or city based) then it’s not too much time. Mine takes about a half-hour each week day and 2 hours each Friday/Saturday/Sunday during basketball season. If it were year-round it would probably take much more time. </p>
<p>What kind of non profit are you considering? Have you ever had experience in running any kind of organization?</p>
<p>I would like it to be community-based. </p>
<p>romanigypsyeyes, I was considering something in the field of what you started. I mean not a basketball league, but helping underprivileged/poor children in my area with tutoring, mentoring, games, etc.
I really want to help underprivileged children in all sorts of ways, but I guess I’d have to narrow it down to one specific thing to make things less complicated.</p>

What did you do to start the non-profit basketball league?</p>
<p>Well, I guess for me it was a bit easier because I was already a well established coach and helper in the league. I just took a spin off league and started by getting donations and free equipment from local schools and charities. For the first year, I basically just had to beg for money. Then we did like bottle drives, bake sales, etc to get it going. </p>
<p>Have you worked in-depth at any local charities or non-profits like you’re thinking of getting into? It makes a huge difference when you have that experience and those relationships.</p>
<p>Sorry for taking so long, I just realized you replied to this. Nope unfortunately I don’t have any experience at all in that sort of thing. If this would help me, I’ve volunteered a lot. The non-profit that I am planning isn’t really something I could spin off of anything the way you did. </p>
<p>How hard was the process of applying and establishing the non-profit? Did you have to get a lawyer, fill out a ton of paperwork, and wait like 1 year?</p>
