Non-Refundable Deposit

I'm so proud that my D was so organized and has all of her college applications in. Great...right??! She just got her first acceptance and the letter states that a non-refundable deposit is due within one month of the date of the letter. This is not her first choice school, but it isn't her last choice either. Is this normal? How are we supposed to make that kind of decision without all of the results in? I thought final decisions had to be made in the Spring.

We got a letter like that also. I called the school and asked...basically said that we thought we had until May 1 to make a deposit and a final decision...and also said we couldn't make any decision before financial aid awards were received. It was no problem. Call and ask.

Definitely call. At UT you had better have your room deposit in before you even apply, or you might not have a place to stay even if accepted.

Room deposit IS a good thing to get in if a student is even thinking about going to a school. If this is a room deposit at a large state U, then it would be wise to get that deposit in. As soon as received, your child is in the queue for rooms. If this is an enrollment deposit, I think it cannot be required until May 1.
