non-semester schools

Yes, there is a break between each quarter. At DD’s quarter school, the first quarter ended the second week of December and was followed by a three week break. The winter quarter ended near the end of March and was followed by a week long break. The spring quarter ended the second week of June and was followed by a summer break that ended mid September.

^^^Ooh, I like that system. How many weeks is each quarter?

On the quarter system you can take more classes in the same time period vs semesters. You can take three elective courses vs only two in the same time frame. When I went to school, nursing students were only required 2 quarters of chemistry which freed them to take an extra class the third quarter. On a semester system they would have lost that class. Over 4 years it adds up to about an extra semester of courses.
Quarter system allows more flexibility and variety of courses. It can be intense but well worth it.
the quarter lasted 8-12 weeks depending on the season.
