Non stellar applicants????

I am just getting a complex on reading the stats of the deferred applicants!!!!! This gets even tougher when you realize you are an international applicant, without stellar SAT scores or exemplary extracurricular accomplishments...

The advice that niceilike gave is very realistic! Thanks a lot for that!!!! :D

But then how much MIT really appreciate diversity? If you are really skilled at doing something, say a form of art or debating and you want to play it to your advantage, how much does it really matter? Assuming that you have a baseline academic score that is.....

Congrats to all the EA acceptees!!!

Thanks!

I say art can be a huge part.
I think that was one of the reasons why I was accepted, that would be my architecture/art portfolio.

Oh? Thats nice to hear...... I am planning to send an art portfolio.... Thanks!

I think it may be powerful and even more powerful if you can link the purpose to art or how it can influence what you want to do at MIT. Like, I wrote my what are you planning on majoring on in architecture, so it just shows how important my architecture and art work is to me.

Oh! I want to major in Bio-Engineering.... But I have been learning this form of ancient Indian art, for the past 9 years..... Its really close to my heart, and I've worked very hard on it since I began learning it.... So can I write about how much effort I put into creating some of my paintings? I have already talked about painting as the thing I do for pleasure.....

Yes, you can write about it. I wouldn't suggest it being another response on the app. since you already talked about it, but if you send the arch. people some samples of your work and I'm pretty sure they wouldn't mind hearing about what it means to you.

I need to send art portfolios to 4 other colleges... Dat means I need to scan and get print out of the originals.. Rite...??... Is there anybody sending the originals..??

No... Iam not sending the originals of the artworks either.... Iam planning to write about it in the column for the thing I have created....

My son was accepted EA. He's an avid musician and composer, and plans to continue to pursue both in college. He submitted a CD of his bassoon and piano performances.

Reading the blogs and knowing several other kids at MIT, I believe MIT truly does look for real people, kids with outside interests and non-science passions. They say they'll look at anything you send in, so go for it!

Thanks a lot!! :) I am sending my arts portfolio....

Evn I am sending an art portfolio.....

Yeah, MIT seems pretty interested about what people do outside of everything it sounds like. I also wanted to put together a CD for oboe, but I didn't get the time to make one.
But, what I suggest to you guys. Make print outs on nice paper and if you can slip it into one of those black portfolios so it is harder to lose the pages if you can. Try a couple runs on the scans, try different settings, I suggest tiff files with at least a 300dpi setting set. If you can, include some information about yourself and what the whole portfolio shows and then explain each of the works.

Don't send originals, unless they were specifially done for that school and they require them. You probably won't get them back or you won't until next fall.

im not gonna minor in music or anything
so would it be good to send in a CD?
how do they know i actually played it?

Its ok to send a portfolio I think... I think you also have to send a recommendation letter from your music instructor..
