Non-teacher Recommendations?

Well, I've asked the doctored I shadowed to write me a college recommendation, and he said yes. I shadowed him for like 3 or so days in his clinic, and 2 days in the O.R.

I'm planning to apply to UNC-Chapel Hill (in state) early action, but it states that they prefer only one application - which is done by me giving them my teacher's email address (and my teacher will fill the form electronically). However, I've got two problems. I have already asked two of my favorite teachers from Junior year, in addition to my doctor. Should I just choose one of the two teachers and my doctor to write the recommendations for UNC? And how would I go about sending the recommendation from my doctor?

This is also a problem on the common application.. I have no idea how to proceed because the forms specifically ask for two TEACHER recommendations, and that their forms are for teacher-specific questions.

Thanks in advance

I have little idea as to how you would handle the recs in terms of forms and stuff.

That said–if you shadowed him for five days, will the doctor really be able to write a rec that is non-generic and informative about you as a person? It’s something you ought to keep in mind–your teachers have taught you for a year, at least; you’ve shadowed the doctor for less than a week. (Unless you knew him well before–then that’s different.)

Best of luck.

I’m not familiar with the UNC app, but for the common app, you could send in the two teacher recommendations and send in the third letter from your doctor as a supplementary letter. That said, does the doctor know you well enough to write a strong letter of recommendation for you?

I believe so. We’ve had some particularly mind-opening or “deep” conversations about various things - especially medicine, and I’ve been volunteering at the hospital he sometimes works at over the summer. Btw, the five days were spread over different weeks (actually, during a span of 6 weeks.. due to scheduling problems with the hospital); I also was called in to shadow him at 2AM for a night call.

I don’t see the supplementary letter in the Common App site. Under school forms, there are only the Teacher Evaluation 1/2 forms.

Anyone out there that knows this stuff? Thanks

Bump…

Just have the physician send a hard copy of his letter directly to the college. If you plan to submit a second teacher’s rec; download the paper form and have him/her send that in addition to the other teacher’s electronic recommendation. Lots of students submit supplements of various types; they’ll get it into your folder.

Thanks Marathon!

So do you think I should send 1, 2, or all 3 of my recommendations to UNC?

Bump…
