Non-Traditional Transfer Help (Comp Sci)

@Hanna, I followed your advice and called my state’s flagship to speak with a transfer admissions rep. While I more than meet the transfer GPA requirement for admission to the university, I won’t make it for the CS major (2.7 CGPA). They consider the entire UG academic record and will make no exceptions for special medical circumstances during my first degree (undiagnosed lupus), or the 15 year gap between my earning the first degree and starting the second one; nor will my current good GPA (3.4; 3.6 when summer school ends Friday), from this past year be given any additional weight in the admissions process.

However, the admissions adviser DID tell me that I could choose a different, non-impacted, major to get admitted into and then change my major to CS after a semester, and also that Calculus I was NOT needed for CS (just engineering transfers). The GPA needed to change majors to CS is 2.5.

So, the plan is to transfer in as a physics major and switch to CS as soon as I can. Physics isn’t an impacted major at the university (only three sciences aren’t) and has no special GPA or course requirements, so I’m a sure admit under this plan. I chose physics because I’ll be taking math and science courses that will directly apply to the CS major.

Lastly, it’s not going to hurt me to name the school and give away my home state. My state’s flagship is the University of South Carolina.

Wonderful! I’m so glad you called and asked!
