Non-transferable courses?

I was just looking over the info on UC GPA calculations and noticed that a lot of the schools only factor in transferable courses. I took several courses at a 4-year institution that don't articulate to my CCC--specifically two special topics courses in English and Sociology. I'll be near the upper limit of transferable units, so I'm not terribly concerned with getting credit for these courses, and am more just wondering if those grades will be factored into my GPA calculations. Thanks!

Usually non-transferable courses aren’t counted into your GPA.

How do I know if these courses will be considered non-transferable? Is it whatever my CCC deems transferable, or will the UC’s accept courses my CCC won’t? For example, I know for a fact my CCC won’t take my special topics comparative literature course and I think it’s highly unlikely any UC will have a similar course offering. Will the UC’s automatically consider it non-transferable because of this, or will they possibly consider it since it is still a legitimate English course?

At whichever CC the course was taken, the course should have some information staying it’s transferability. UC’s choose which courses they will accept from CC’s.

The courses I’m worried about were taken at an out of state 4-year university. Most of my courses I took out of state should transfer fine, since they are generic, lower division courses. However, a few of them I took early on were special topics courses on very specific subjects that do not have an equivalent at other schools. I want to know if those courses will likely be included in my GPA calculation.

It’s hard to assure you that all these special topics courses you have taken will be counted towards the Assist GPA because (1) I don’t know which courses you are referring to and which OOS college they are from and (2) because there is no system like Assist to really show the equivalent courses from OOS colleges. Maybe you want to do some digging into a UC you are interested in’s course catalog to try to find the equivalent course(s). If that doesn’t work, perhaps calling admissions and having a rep review your transcript to evaluate whether the courses have equivalents would be a viable option.

I read that they don’t review transcripts until after you are admitted. I was just curious if the default decision is to include most courses in the GPA calculation and decide later if the units count, or if the default is to disregard the courses and then possibly decide later to count them. Honestly, it would boost my GPA if they don’t include the special topics courses. I have 3 B’s total, two of which are the courses in question, and the rest of my grades are A’s. My GPA would go from something like a 3.75 to a 3.89 if they aren’t included.

Your GPA is still good, so honestly I wouldn’t worry about it too much. I would call UC that you’re thinking about going to and ask them how they evaluate OOS credits.

Okay thanks! After this semester it should be 3.81 regardless, so I’m hoping that is solidly competitive for the top UC’s. If I have ongoing correspondence with a UC, say Berkeley, is it anonymous or will it be tied to me and my application?
