non-varsity sports: should you list them on your application?

i'm not on a varsity sport at my school, and it's unlikely that i ever will be, because at my school tennis is insanely competitive. at any other "normal" school i'm confident that i would have made the varsity team, its just that my school is weird.

i've heard people say that if you're not on varsity, don't bother listing it on the application. is this true?

Not at all. If you truly enjoy a sport, it doesn't matter what level you're at. Colleges are looking for passion. As long as you demonstrate that in your app, you should be fine.

how can i demonstrate that i'm passionate if they see that i played for 4 years, and yet, still never made varsity?

the fact that you continued to play for 4 years speaks for itself. If you aren't good enough to be a recruited athlete I don't see why they would care how good you are at it or whether you made varsity or not. Definitely list it, you put lots of time in it, and you don't want to hide something you spent 4 years doing. It will help not hurt.

If you further want to clarify/demonstrate passion you can write an essay about how competitive it is at your school I guess.
