Noncitizen without a security number

Hi! I'm having a hug problem.. I'm living temporarily in the US and I want to study here, but I'm not a citizen and I do not have a security number. How can I apply for FAFSA without a social security number? Thanks in advance!

See if you qualify as an eligible noncitizen.

I believe you would need an Alien Registration number, but not an SSA number.

Sounds like you are an int’l who is here temporarily in the US for either school or parents’ job. If so, then you aren’t able to file FAFSA. FAFSA is for citizen and permanent residents (or other rare cases, listed above).

FAFSA is an app for federal aid. It isnt’ for int’ls.

As @mom2collegekids‌ said, I am here temporarily in the US for parents’ job so how can I use the Alien Registration Number? Is it the same as I-94? Or can I use my student ID for FAFSA instead of a security number? Thank you very much for all the information and help!

You must me either a US citizen, or US permanent resident in order to receive federal aid. Your parents are here on work visa. While this makes you be legally in the US, it does not make you eligible for federal or state aid and does not make you an eligible non-citizen.

Sybbie saved it all.

You are not able to complete the FAFSA at all. You need to find out what your colleges do regarding financial aid for international students.

Can your parents afford to pay anything toward your education costs?

NO, you can’t use the FAFSA application. You are not a citizen or permanent resident. You are considered to be an int’l, just as if you were currently living in another country. The fact that you live here because of your parents’ job does not qualify you for federal aid.

You need to ask your parents how much they will pay for college since either they will have to pay ALL COSTS…or if you have high enough stats, you could apply to schools that will give an int’l student some merit scholarship money. Or if you are lucky and qualify, there are some schools that give need based aid to int’ls. But those are very hard to get into…and usually require very high stats.

Either way, you need to ask your parents how much they will pay each year.

The federal gov’t isn’t going to give you any money. Besides…I don’t think you understand FAFSA. The only “free money” the federal gov’t gives is to LOW INCOME American students.

You don’t apply FOR FAFSA; FAFSA is the application form for federal grants and loans.

You can ask the colleges that you are interested in whether or not they grant financial aid to international students and apply as an international student.

Ok thanks!
