noncustodial parent's spouse

Do private colleges usually take the non-custodial parent's spouse's assets into account when calculating the EFC? My mom owns a house and her husband does too, and I was wondering if his estate would be considered an investment for fin aid purposes.

Private colleges typically use the PROFILE form, which asks for income and assets of custodial parent, custodial parent's spouse, non-custodial parent, and non-custodial parent's spouse. The non-custodial PROFILE is what's filled out by the non-custodial parent.

How private colleges use this information is up to the college itself. Not all private colleges include income/assets of the non-custodial parent when calculating need.

If the school requires the Profile, you must include information from your parents and your parents' spouses on that form.

FAFSA also requires the custodial spouse's information, including income and assets. (Of course, it doesn't require anything from the non-custodial parent.)

Thanks for your replies. I know that the noncustodial Profile requires the information, I was just wondering if/how colleges were using it. But I guess it varies a lot from college to college. I'll just wait for my financial aid package in July. I am a current college student whose noncustodial parent recently remarried, and I am nervous that it might affect my fin aid package a lot. But I'll have to wait and see. Thanks again!

Hmmm...when did you file your financial aid applications? Was your non-custodial parent married when you filed them?

My mother married last December. I filed the paperwork by the college's April 15 deadline, but apparently they just started reviewing current students' apps and won't get back to us until July.

Thanks for the clarification. Yes, your non-custodial parent info must then be included on this year's Profile.

Wow...July...and I thought MY kids' schools were late giving this info in May.
