Nonprocrastination tips?

What do you guys do to keep yourself from procrastinating?
I keep telling myself stuff like "If you don't do these fifty math questions without touching the computer you won't get into Stanford/Berkeley/Insertcollegenamehere". Of course it's total ********, but it works.

How 'bout you?

I think “If I finish this, I get to watch tv, play games, and chat without having to worry about homework.”

The method I used to stop procrastinating was actually procrastinating. I procrastinated my homework to 1AM every day for a month & ended up getting an avg. of 3 hours sleep/day. It sucked. I never want to live like that ever again… so I don’t procrastinate.

I used to use the “If I don’t do this, I won’t get into ___,” but that doesn’t work anymore since I’ve already sent in apps and can get all A’s with moderate effort.

So starting recently, I made a study pact with a close friend; we both finish all homework within 4 hours of school ending, and then instead of going on the computer we go running or practice our band/orchestra duets and teach each other the instruments we play. It’s so much more satisfying than procrastinating on the internet or watching TV or just sitting around. (It is working quite well so far - I’ve slept at around 9 or 10 PM each day and wake up feeling SO refreshed, more alert, and just happier in general.)

Get off CC… duh

I’m like Nike. I just do it.

Study Hacks <– blog by Cal Newport.

Of course, it doesn’t help when you read his website to procrastinate… o.o’

FallenAngel - you’re a boss. i wish i could do that.

Think about it this way: It’s gotta get done sometime, so why not do it now so you won’t have to worry about it later?

Not to mention, you will spend the same amount of time finishing up the homework whether you do it now or later, so you might as well finish it ASAP.

Exactly! Works for me on everything except the most atrocious assignments (read: AP Physics C labs).

Usually, computers are the biggest distraction from working, so I usually end up leaving my laptop in my parents’ room until my work is done.

If you have a desktop, disconnect your Internet and shut it off.

What if it’s not something you have to do, like SAT math studying?..

I have been going to bed at 11:00 each night and then sleeping until 10:00, and basically lazing around while make no progress despite frequent attempts…

Help.

This?

http://www.funz.eu/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/When-Work-Feels-Overwhelming....jpg

I did this too last year.

Lol, I concur.

I might try this.

I procrastinate by doing my easier homework…

If I don’t get started on my homework and readings right when I get home, I normally won’t be able to sleep til 2am. Knowing that I need sleep, I just focus on getting it done. Unfortunately, because of this, I haven’t been actually able to learn anything. Instead, I’ve learned how to swallow and regurgitate useless facts and figures for equally useless tests.

Ah well, at least I’ll be somewhat prepared to handle college work.

Same here.

I pretty much tell myself the same thing OP says haha: “Do this **** Cali or you won’t get into USC”.

Procrastinate now, don’t put it off!!

Hang up a deferral/rejection letter from your school of choice above your study area. Your SAT score will increase by 210 points, guaranteed.

I’m a horrible procrastinator. My school is lame so I get A’s in all APs by doing HW/studying the day of the assignment being due. As in 10 minutes before class. How I’m going to break this habit for college is a mystery…

Do all your homework that doesnt involve a computer first. If you have a laptop, hide it under a pile of clothes in a closet far from your room. Then close and lock your door. You’ll have to go through several steps to retrieve your laptop, and you’ll usually be able to stop yourself before you reach it.
