Considering that nontransferable courses are not counted into your GPA, but the adcoms still look at the grade, do most people take these classes P/NP? I know there is a certain number of courses you can take P/NP, but does this rule still apply to nontransferable courses? I kind of made it my goal to not take any classes P/NP because grad schools may look down on it, but it would allow me to focus more on my other courses.

If it makes any difference, I'm talking about a nontransferable course that is a prereq of a transferable course, such as math.

From my experience many students do take non-transferable courses–especially prereq courses for math–as P/NP. I took a pre-req for Stats P/NP. I don’t believe that taking a non-transferable course P/NP factors into the quota you are allowed for P/NP classes.

For non-transferable courses that you are confident that you could get an ‘A’ in, almost always take it for a grade. Grad schools basically count it all and it would be to your GPA advantage to get an extra ‘A’.

Also, I would seriously recommend taking classes even if they don’t transfer. Some of my best classes of greatest value to me were not transferable.

Grad schools count all nontransferable courses into your GPA? Really? I don’t know if it makes any difference, but I’m talking about business school.

If you don’t get an A in a nontransferable course, do the adcoms look down on it in anyway when you’re transferring? I’m not talking about Cs but more like Bs when the rest of your grades are pretty much As.

From what I’ve gathered, getting a ‘B’ in a non-transferable course does less damage to your prospects of admission than a transferable course would. Excessive amounts of non-transferable B’s can also hurt in painting a different grade trend story. But to answer your question, I don’t think 1 or 2 B’s in non-transferable courses would do much damage.

I know that for law school and all the masters programs i’ve looked into factor in all grades (MPP and MPA).

I took all of my Math pre-reqs that were non-transferable as P/NP at CC, and then completed the regular math courses for a letter grade. Its completely acceptable by 4 year schools for you to do that.

Do you have any idea for business school, though?

I guess basically what I’m asking is, does it look better (when transferring) if I take nontransferable math courses for an A rather than taking it P/NP?

Thanks for the smart ass response, but it wasn’t what I was looking for. You’re so naive it’s laughable.

My question is if it’ll look better enough to make a real difference and if it’s worth going the extra effort to get an A in the course when I could be focusing on my other classes. Obviously I feel that a nontransferable course weighs little, if any to the application.

lol yes so naive… you explicitly asked whether an A or a pass looks better on your transcript. Asking whether or not it’s even worth the extra effort is a different question entirely.
