DD is deciding between Tulane and UC Davis (in state) and is having a very hard time deciding! She loves the campus and the idea of attending school in NOLA, but she is afraid she won't fit in with the other students at Tulane. She is undecided regarding her major, but she is leaning toward Political Science or History. She is not a party girl, loves everything country and will likely join some sort of singing group during college. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Has she been able to visit Tulane? Why does she not think she would fit in at Tulane? I think at any college there are your own kind of people, it’s just a matter of finding them! That’s why students need to get involved in activities in their areas of interest. Clubs, Greek Life, sports, intramurals etc. Make sure she joins the accepted students page on facebook, she can start getting to her her possible future classmates and find like minded students. My son was afraid he would be the only one that likes punk music but he’s already made “friends” (I use that term loosely until they all meet in person) but at least he knows he can probably find some friends to go to VooDoo fest with him, lol! If she’s into music NOLA is a great place to be, here is ALWAYS something going on related to music. It’s funny how I keep hearing Tulane is such a party school but I see so many mentions from parents and students themselves that they are not party people. (do people assume it’s a huge party school because it’s in NOLA??) I don’t think she has anything to worry about in that regard. Every school has its party crowd and every school had students that don’t party.

Well…Yeah. That’s it exactly. I have been on the UC Davis campus several times. They party plenty. Heck, they are in the middle of wine country! LOL.

@Oldbear14 - If she loves the campus and the idea of attending school in NOLA, she is most of the way there. If your daughter is a nice, intelligent, reasonably social person she will fit in just fine. Not being a party girl is no issue at all, neither was my D and she thrived at Tulane. There are tons of kids that like country at Tulane, I can assure you. Tulane has its fair share of Texans, Sooners, a lot of kids from throughout the Southeast, areas where country is generally popular. Of course country is popular in NYC too, a moderately well kept secret. Your D can expose other kids to her favorite artists, and they can show her some new things.

She will be absolutely fine, if 98% of other experiences that started out like your D’s are any indication.

Thanks for the replies! Any and all information is helpful at this point. The party atmosphere actually doesn’t seem to be her concern, I just mentioned it as a minor factor. We visted a few weeks ago at a destination weekend and the administration did a great job! She spent time with a current student from Nor Cal who loves it and I think she got a flavor for the social scene. I think she is a little apprehensive because she is a public school kid and this will be her first experience at a private school. She also keeps hearing about the high percentage of student from the North East. I know CA is the third largest population, but it’s still only 13-15%. I think it will reassure her to hear that atleast 1/3 of the students come from the south. She has just connected on the facebook page, so hopefully that will help also.

@Oldbear14 - Actually I thought CA was second after NY. Or was that IL? Because I am almost sure Louisiana was 3rd. Now that is just for the last incoming class, not the whole undergrad class. I forget now, and don’t have time to look it up at the moment. But in any case, I know compared to a UC school 13-15% is small, but that is actually quite a lot for a school like Tulane. I think CA is the fastest growing group at Tulane. But honestly, it really shouldn’t matter. Lots, and I mean lots of the students at Tulane come from public high schools. My D, once again, was one. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it was actually a majority of the incoming classes pretty consistently. Later I will have to see if I have ever had any info on that.

She definitely sounds like a Tulanian. I hope she just comes on down and starts a fabulous 4 years in NOLA.

@Oldbear14 - Oh, I also meant to say that the group on the Facebook site tends to skew fairly heavily towards the party crowd. Not surprising I suppose, but you might want to mention that to her just so she isn’t too surprised. It is not a random representation, or at least hasn’t been in the past.
