I'm looking for some current info on NMH. Is it a good school? What type of student does it attract? Are the students serious? How does it compare to some of the more "elite" prep schools? Thanks!

I will most likely be attending NMH next year. Yes, its a good school it can argurably be place in a “tier 1 or 2” position. As for classes, as you may know, you only take 3 classes a day. But, when I visited the classes were interesting and the students had fun as well as being serious. The student population is diverse, you have your lax bro, preppy girls, down to earth guys and girls, people from asia, europe, middle east, and south america. Also, the dress code is casual, if you did not know. So all in all I would say its a great school, when I went there they said deerfield and loomis were their rivals, which are 2 great schools.

The title of this thread is spelled wrong, FYI

Only 3 classes a day? So does that mean the classes are really long, or that the day is really short?

They have block scheduling, so you are in each class for roughly an hour and half (assuming I remembered correctly). I thought it was an absolutely wonderful school. Though I chose to matriculate elsewhere, I would still recommend the school to anyone. There was a very warm vibe at the school. Academically, they offer an extensive array of courses. Though they may not offer as many as HADES schools may, they still offer more than enough math/science courses for the majority of most “advanced” students. The campus is absolutely STUNNING as well! Good luck!

They also have outstanding arts departments! The performing, music, and visual arts all receive a ton of attention and respect at the school. NMH is also home to some very skilled athletes!

Classes are an hour and 20 minutes

Thanks yankeefan! I knew they were roughly that long.

Anybody have any info on NMH’s crew program ?

Crew is ok, not stellar. The program does graduate some strong individuals who go on to row in college and on us teams.

Does NMH recruit heavily for crew ?

I’m a recent grad, so I can chime in here. Crew isn’t heavily recruited – not like basketball. Though in my time at NMH, there were three successful rowers that stand out to me at the moment: two went on to UPenn and then, I believe, to compete on the US team. The other went on to row at Stanford. Overall, the crew program is solid. It’s very popular. The boathouse isn’t stellar, but the shells are in line with our competition in the Eight School Assoc. If you’d like the contact info for the coach, backchannel me and I’ll give it to you. Go Hoggers!

NMH Head stepping down at the end of this year. Normally, the head gives the school at least a year to search for a new one.

VERY unusual…doesn’t seem to be health related, likely a major difference of opinions somewhere. Will watch closely…thanks for posting!

This is a surprise…looks like he is leaving immediately.

No, not a difference in opinion. There’s likely a scandal behind this.

It reads not so much scandal as family issues.

Both a “scandal” and a “family issue.” Can’t say more, I’m sure it will come out soon. Lots of rumors going around - some have a thread of truth in them with lots of non-facts filtered in.

Hmmm…wouldn’t be the first “scandal” involving staff and family here. Probably not an unusual thing at boarding schools.

Not only not an unusual thing at boarding schools, truly not an unusual thing in life. The older I get, the more I realize how messy life is for so many. I think things get magnified in our eyes at boarding schools because they are small communities and we have an impression that smart, well-educated people should be immune to life’s foibles and follies, which, of course, they are not.
