North Campus Isolation?

I am strongly considering U-M for my undergraduate engineering degree, but because the School of Engineering is on the north campus I have a few concerns. How is the social life on north campus? Are north campus students generally isolated from the activities on the central campus? Is it like a school of its own, or is it not much different than living on the central campus? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Social life on north campus isn't very different. Usually you go down to central for parties/events (although there are a few events that do occur at Pierpont). But all in all, it's not a big deal. You aren't "isolated" by any means, but you probably will have to take a bus to Central. But remember, there are LOTS of students in the exact same position. In fact, the 2-3 AM buses on weekends is actually a ton of fun sometimes (imagine like...****loads of drunk kids crammed into a bus..ha, just hope nobody throws up on you). It's not very different from living on Central Campus. Really, being on North Campus isn't that big of a deal. Sure, it sucks taking buses to parties and stuff, but you get use to it. And on weekdays I don't mind living on North the tiniest bit. Only on weekends/nightimes I do (mainly cause I have to take a bus, and buses stop running at 3 AM on weekends and they are much less frequent on weekends)

There are about 2300 undergrads living on North Campus. You'll probably make friends.

...so we get dorm info in like may or something?

having a large campus may sound scary, but the bus system is so efficient that nothing seems too far....
Tons of people go down to central for fun, etc.... you also have many places to eat in pierpont, etc. And the bus stop is right next to your dorm hahaha, Bursley is ok, but Baits, oh man, NEVER GO TO BAITS hahahahaha

good luck

from what i've heard is your first 1-2 years most of your classes will be on central campus anyway, and even though you're studying engineering you can get a dorm on central and make it to all of your classes fine.

I was thinking of trying to get into one of the halls in the Hill area. North side of central campus. Seems like a good compromise.

i would definately try to get on central your first year. seems to be where everything happens

North Campus is like the twilight zone. I go up there every 3 months or so and it's worlds away from the hustle and bustle of central campus, so if you like that, then north might be the way to go. Plus, the dude is pretty awesome.

"the Dude"?? I'm engineering and thinking that North Campus would be the way to go, because the library or whatever the massive building on North is pretty sweet.

short for the Duderstadt. Big place on north campus. That place will be your second home if you're an engineer.

Dude = best part about North imo :P

so would you recommend north campus for a freshman engineer?

I wouldn't...you really only have 2 engineering classes freshman year (Engin 100 and 101). I'm in Engin 101 right now, and you could quite easily get all of that work done at the Ugli or on the Caen computers in your dorm. I think Engin 100 had more group work, but for that, they will pair you with kids from your dorm, so it isn't a big deal.

First, the best place on North Campus is not the Dude its Panda Express.
Second, North Campus is an excellent place to live, especially if you get Bursley. Excellent rooms, excellent food, and its very near to all the engineering buildings. Infact, my room-mate, an engineer has made it a habit to get out of the dorm at the class time because he can make it before 'Michigan' time ( 10 minutes past the hour).
Oh yeah, and you'll be spending tons of time at the Dude. Good place to study !
