I am moving into Scott House on North Campus in less than a month and me and my roommates are trying to figure out what all we need to bring for our quad? Since we have not seen the dorm room we aren’t sure what all comes in it. We are also trying to figure out what we need in the bathroom. Does it come with a towel rack and all that other good stuff? We really just want to know what are the absolute necessities for the quad?

I’ve been in other dorms on north and there was a huge towel/shower stuff rack on one wall. You will probably want a carpet, tv, and a futon or other place to sit. The desk chairs are somewhat uncomfortable. It comes with a microfridge, beds, dressers, desks, and desk chairs. Maybe more. I would when urds.osu.edu room lookup and see the floor plan. That will tell you for sure.

I have visited 2 quads in our college process. In a quad there is no room what so ever for a couch or futon. I know my S is bringing a small tv stand. That will fit on one of the walls by the desks. A small chair would fit there instead if someone wanted to do that.

The one bathroom we saw had a shelf with 4 shelves-one for each person, but I think they brought that themselves. The other bathroom we saw had one towel bar. They will need to bring something else to hang towels on.

You should have half of the space under the beds for storage. I know my S wants to bring his coffee maker. That may end up on his desk. There is not a lot of room.

Get with your roommates to see who is bringing the things you only need one of: shower curtain, bath mat, tv/game system (if desired), cleaning supplies (you are responsible for cleaning your own bathroom), carpet/rug, etc…

My son was in Houck and it is similar to Scott. This is what I think you’ll need:
desk lamps, tv, tv stand, long coax cable so you have options about locating TV, duct tape/scissors, and/or Command hooks so you can secure the cable out of the way, Master lock for lock drawers (you’ll each need one I think), at least 1-2 sets of plastic storage drawers or something to make use of the lower closet space (important since there are very few dresser drawers to go around), underbed storage, non slip seat cushion (makes the chairs more confortable and you won’t have room for extra seating), memory foam bed topper, hangers. The space is very tight. If it is like Houck, two fixed desks have a shelf above but the two other desks do not have a shelf above. If you get a desk without a shelf above then you might want some kind of hutch or stacking desk organizers. There is a freestanding bookshelf in the room main room though. In the winter, a coat tree and boot tray are nice. There are towel racks and shelves in the bathroom but my son’s GF (in Taylor) needed over-the-toilet shelving for all the “girl” stuff they had. That’s all I can think of for now.

D lived in Scott House last year. She thought it was a great location and is living in an duplex this year with two of her roommates just five minutes from that dorm. Some say that North is the ‘quiet’ side of campus… not necessarily so. There was plenty going on in the dorm/NSA (Norton, Scott, Archer) residence areas. It is really up to the RA on a floor how much ‘partying’ is tolerated and I think, at times, it became a little out of control…

Space is tight and organization items will help keep the bedroom/closet areas in order. It is true that there is no room for futon. A plastic shelving box for the closet is an excellent suggestion. A small stand/shelf for between the beds is helpful to place phones/eyeglasses/books. One of the roommates on the top bunk had a hanging pocket thing that she could place those items in as well. D studied/read/watched movies on laptop in her bed and liked having a clip on light. You will definitely want to bring a soft rug for between the bunk beds - one that has a rubberized bottom so it does not slide when a roommate jumps off the bed :)

In the study area, one side has two desks with a bookshelf above and sharing drawers in between the desks. The other side has two desks with shelving on the side built into the desk - this is the type D had. I think she would have preferred the desks with the shelving above as space was tight with computer/printer/lamp taking up the space. If you get there early enough you can choose which one you’d prefer.

Something else to note that you may or may not know, Scott is a co-ed dorm with guys and girls living on the same floor. As the residents got to know each other, it was not uncommon for guys to come and go from D’s room and/or be hanging out. Two of her roommates actually met their current boyfriends that lived on the same floor. This at times made for some uncomfortable situations with ‘private time’, if you know what I mean. It can be fun as far as socializing, etc, but it definitely took some getting used to for D, especially after showering, etc. and coming out of the bathroom and need to walk through the study area in her towel to get to the bedroom area. This may not be an issue for others, but I thought it was worth mentioning…
