North Carolina Colleges for B, B+ students

schlagowsky is right. My two S’s at (different) NC state schools each have 3 roommates.
In each case, three of the four guys went to high sch. together and the fourth guy is fr. out of state. However, my S’s are the only ones who were born in NC. The others moved fr. Fla.,NY, Conn. to our area. The oos roommates are fr. Illinois and Maryland.

Definitely check out Western Carolina-they have a number of majors ( more than we had seen in many larger schools). Our school’s college counselor indicated merit $ were fairly generous ( though this was before Fall of 2008 economic disaster). What about Winthrop - near SC border with NC or Gardner Webb? Also check out Salisbury.

What a lot of great suggestions. I especially like your suggestions PackMom and appreciate the heads up about merit aid at HPU. When looking for merit aid, it seems to make sense to apply to many schools just to see what offers turn up.

Son will probably be more interested in the IST or IT programs then anything else while we look at colleges this year. I’ve read that Queens U requires an internship which is appealing to me.

Found your thread missypie! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/770925-tell-me-what-you-know-about-other-non-chapel-hill-schools-unc-system.html

They have to offer that many scholarships, because quite frankly, nobody really wants to go to Western. Aside from its weak academic reputation, Cullowhee is extremely boring. I’ve heard it’s grown a bit since I last visited, but a few years ago Cullowhee/Sylva consisted primarily of WCU and a Wal-Mart.

It’s an absolutely gorgeous area if one likes hiking or the outdoors, however. The campus is nothing to write home about, but you can see mountains all around you from pretty much anywhere on campus.

Western doesn’t have an IT major. I have two neighbors whose S’s went to Western and loved it. One even stayed on two more yrs for grad. sch. He turned down Elon and Guilford for Western. Just depends on where your interests lie.
