I did not see this thread started, oddly, so I though I would start it.
My D24 has submitted her application for EA to NC State. We are OOS (TN). Her school is nominating her for the Parks (she will be submitting that today.
She is a full IB candidate. National Merit Commended. AC 34. GPA 4.37 weighted/3.95 unweighted. Captain of XCountry and Rock Climbing. Certified Rescue SCUBA diver. She applied for Textile Engineering at the Wilson School. Best of luck to all applicants.
My son just applied for EA - Engineering First Year.
ACT 34. SAT 1450. GPA 4.38 W/ 4 UW. Class rank 6%. Year-round swimmer, State qualifier. Captain of HS swim team. Engineering internship. 9 classes dual enrolment. Certified Lifeguard/ CPR. Owner/operator of a small business.
Maybe in a tie breaker situation but he’s well above the line. With all due respect, he should be looking at Duke and other top 25 schools. NC State is a safety.
I am guessing based on the weighted GPA compared to unweighted that your S24 is out of state?
Transfer Course Equivalencies: North Carolina State University (to get an idea of what might transfer) Was he taking dual enrollment classes at a transferable level? If so, then I don’t see why that would be an issue. At the other extreme, if there were 25 AP classes at his high school but he chose variations of Underwater Basket Weaving for all his dual enrollment classes (instead of transferable gen ed or STEM classes), I could see that raising an eyebrow.
If you are out of state, there are two unavoidable issues…one is that NC State admits by major, so engineering has higher than average standards, and the other being the cap (due to state law) on out of state students.
Good luck to him! At this point all we can do is wait.
@HopefullMom2 Meant to reply to your comment, sorry!
My D24 loves NC State! We toured in September and went to a football game and that sold her. Unfortunately we are out of state.
1370 SAT, top 3% in her class of 500, 3.98 unweighted and 4.6 weighted GPA.
She applied for Design studies as her first choice and Travel and Tourism as her second.
So anxiously awaiting results😬
Sorry I missed this! I was doing napkin math and with a 4.0 UW I would have expected his W to be higher if it was using the +.5 for honors and +1.0 for dual enrollment/AP that is common in NC. I thought maybe out of state different weighting factors.
As long as he has advanced STEM courses in math/chem/physics he sounds like a perfect fit for what they want from their incoming engineering students, and being in state only helps!
Looks like it has been the last week of January the last 2 years, unfortunately. It’s the top choice for DS and all of his other notifications should be in by December 15.
Ugh- for some reason I had mid December in my head for NCSU. So S24 will hear from three mid December and then the last three “by” end of January. Fells like a long time from now.
