North Dakota? a hook?

is it true that being from ND is a hook? and is this for all schools or only some?

i guess. because theres a hook for everything

Probably less so for schools in North Dakota. ;)

I don't know what's a "hook" and what's not a "hook", but I would think it might be of some interest at certain east coast and west coast schools, assuming your grades and scores are appealing. My understanding is that actual "hooks" are things you bring to the campus that they have need of to keep their campus vital, lively, culturally diverse -- athletes, musicians, activists, URMs. I'm not sure geography exactly rises to that level, but it might well be an asset in a competitive pool. I always hear people talking about applicants from North Dakota being a rare occurance... but I suppose Alaska, Wyoming, Idaho, South Dakota, etc. would fall into the same catagory.

This would be a "tip" rather than a "hook", but I think a fairly strong tip.

Many colleges like to say they have students from every state. So if you have similar stats as the typical candidate to that school I'm guessing being from North Dakota could work in your favor.

a girl at columbia was called "50 state" because, with her 1050/1600 on the sat, she was the only person from her state to apply.

you got a hook, hun! you have a greater general chance of admissions than someone from CA or the Northeast

All else being equal an Ivy'll choose the ND student over the one from NY, CT. But as said it's not the full-blown hook like URM, athlete, etc.

Maybe, if they've heard the story of the "Kindred spirits."

yah don't kid yourself you are hooked

I say it's definitely a hook (though not a huge one) to be from ND (even though I wouldn't want to live there just for that =P)

for schools that are into geographic diversity (check out the common data set) that'd be a yesish

"Probably less so for schools in North Dakota. "

I disagree. North Dakota universities might so shocked to learn that one of their own wants to go to school there that they might take him/her with a full scholarship and throw in a Mercedes as incentive.

^ lol. I can imagine...

yeah, its a hook. Not one of the huge ones but its pretty big.

It's a large hook. Doesn't mean you can slack off though. Use it as motivation.

Yeah there are still quite a few people I know who want to go to the ivies so i don't think I will slack off.

you might be intersted in reading the thread

I don't think anybody here knows what a "hook" is except sherpa.

No, being from ND is not a hook. It probably is a tip factor though.

LOL, because I just heard the report on Minnesota Public Radio today about North Dakota State University expecting its enrollment to increase.

Thanks to DCforMe for recommending the earlier thread. There is DEFINITELY a hook factor to being a strong student from the Great Plains or mountain states when applying to the famous colleges near the coasts. Go for it.

huge hook. get above a 3.5 unweighted and above a 2000 and u have a shot at ivys.
