My daugher will be a freshman and just got placed in the North Mountain Palomar dorm. What is the vibe of this dorm? Studious? Social? Loud? She was looking for a semi social dorm to balance out her engineering studies and is hoping that this one will fit the bill. She did not get assigned to any of her 5 choices and we are hearing that this happened to many other freshmen as well. Thanks in advance for any info.

hello there. I have been assigned to the palomar dorm as well, and from what I have heard, the north mountain hall is designated for engineering major students. By living in the north mountain, the students get to be involved in the living learning program, I believe, and it really benefits the student to learn more both inside and outside the classrooms. And I don’t think the palomar is a really social dorm, but students do play Frisbee and soccer on the lawn just outside the dorm. Red bricks are the ones that have relatively more social activities.

North mountain is actually probably the perfect balance for her. You get access to the Santa Lucia redbrick common areas, so if she wants she can go study and hang out there as well. North mountain is a dorm, not apartment, but the setup is not like a traditional dorm. Four rooms of 2-3 people share a bathroom. The bathroom is kind of in the middle of the four rooms which are organized in a square. Rooms sharing bathrooms are all same gender. However, it’s possible for the room next door to be of the opposite gender. NM is fairly social. Doors open to the outside, the rooms are big so even being in a triple is not too bad, and there are nice big lawns right outside. And unlike the redbricks, you get a microwave in your room in addition to a refrigerator, which is convenient.

Thanks alot for the response. Thats what I think as well after doing some research and hearing from severeal people, including you. Have a great year.

My daughter is assigned to Palomar too. She is a little disappointed but I think everyone will end up being really happy they got assigned to Palomar. its the people that make it social and if our daughters are social it will be fun for everyone.

My daughter also got assigned to Palomar. I wonder if either of your daughters are going to be her roommate. She is concerned because she is a Psychology major and was expecting to be assigned to the Liberal Arts hall, not the engineering hall. Anyone else out there in Palomar in the Liberal Arts?

NM is technically part of SL (engineering brick brick), but there is usually quite a mix of majors placed in there. And a couple years ago, in the liberal arts redbrick, Trinity, only half of the residents were actually liberal arts majors.

My daughter (the engineer) in North Maountain Palomar just found out that her roomates were not engineering majors (Journalism and Archeology) so it looks like this dorm is NOT for engineers only. The more I hear/read about these dorms, the more they seem to the perfect fit between a study environment and social scene. Plus - the doors that open to the outside world are a very big plus!

I was reading the facebook page for Palomar from last year and it seemed like they had a lot of social events like barbeques, movie nights, etc. so they will get plenty of interaction. There were events for just Palomar and then some for all of the North Mountain dorms.

nytocalpoly, if you haven’t joined the Cal Poly parents page on Facebook, you’re missing a lot of great info. College Confidential has a lot of great information, but the Facebook page takes it to another level. There are also several out of state parent’s pages.
