Trying to help my son with a list of northeast schools. He wants the typical college experience with a big foootball team and lots of school spirit: he’ll be going in with a 4.1 weighted gpa and about a 3.7 uw: going to take
Act net weekend and sat next month: I suspect around a 26 act and 1200 sat, although no way to know for sure: thanks
Boston College, but that would be a reach.
UMass Amherst
UConn
Syracuse
Rutgers
Penn State
Temple
Pitt
@TomSrOfBoston thanks .good options
A good list above. I’d add UMD in the mix.
Yes, UMD is Big 10 now, so he’d get to see a lot of Big 10 games.
Syracuse for sure
The complete list of “big-time” (Division I-FBS) football schools in the Northeast is as follows:
MA: UMass, Boston College* (not to be confused with Boston University)
CT: UConn
NY: Syracuse, UBuffalo, Army
PA: Penn State, Pitt, Temple
NJ: Rutgers
MD: Maryland, Navy
WV: West Virginia U (West Virginia is maybe not “Northeast”, but WVU is very close to the PA border)
The starred schools belong to one of the “Power Five” football conferences, which gives them extra-special status and $$ from TV deals.
There would be more options for your son if he was into sports other than football. Northeastern schools tend to be better at basketball, hockey, and lacrosse.
To get into many on these lists, he would need to score a bit higher than 26/1200. I don’t think you should be eliminating colleges based on sports programs. Unfortunately, too many people do.
Good point @frozencustard . Trying to get other schools to look at ( Jmu , udelaware, unh , uri, South Carolina ). We live in Virginia ans have some good options here , but he wants to go north . Of those on the list provided and mine , which do you think with hose scores he might be able to get into . Thanks for your help .
Thanks @Corbett . Good list . And I agree about the football part . No need to limit his options because of a sport . I was thinking unh , uri , university of Delaware as other options .

Will need to convince him to consider other options .
@Senior_1999 Agree that those other options are good (URI, JMU, Delaware) and UMASS might still be in play as well. UMASS is in a great college town (Amherst) and there’s a lot going on.
JMU plays football at the DI-FCS level, which is the NCAA’s second tier. So many college sports fans would automatically dismiss them as “minor league”.
However, JMU has one of the country’s top FCS programs; they played in the FCS national championship game in both 2016 and 2017. And in fact, JMU has more football talent and greater attendance at games than many FBS schools. In the final 2017 Sagarin ratings, JMU football was ranked higher than most of the northeastern FBS programs listed above, except for Penn State and Boston College.

Funny, we live in MA and my son wants to head south to VA.
Does he want NE for a specific reason? If just doesn’t want warmer weather, how about heading west of virginia? West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee?
@scmom12 He seems to be stuck on the northeast; he says he just feels comfortable there , although his recent list had Ohio state on it . Go figure . He did also put university of South Carolina on it as well so maybe he’s opening up options .
