I came across this article on The Boston Globe website. Northeastern is ranked #8 on the list. We rank in some good company!

The way it is presented, it almost looks like Victoria’s Secret is doing college rankings.

Pretty light weight article…

No question that Northeastern’s reputation is on the rise, but the suggestion that it’s on the same level as JHU, Rice, Emory, Tufts, etc is ridiculous.

The list appears to be completely subjective, with a Boston bias. But at least Northeastern is getting recognized.

I would not put NU or BC in that category…yet!

I agree ^ - this article is completely subjective and should not be posted. Not a credible source and shouldn’t have been posted on CC.

TitusAndronicus is right. Although Northeastern has become very selective at around 31%, JHU, Rice, Emory, and Tufts are around 20% acceptance rate. Still, NEU has leaped ahead of most colleges in the northeast.

All college lists and rankings are subjective to an extent. In the USNWR rankings, Northeasterm doesn’t do too well in the subjective Peer Assessment category. This results in NU ranking lower than the objective stats would indicate.

@lauangela; Why should it not be posted on CC? It was linked from an article in The Boston Globe and represents one group’s assessment of these schools. You can choose to dismiss it if you want, just as some choose to dismiss USNWR rankings as irrelevant.

I have read many posts from TomSr for the last two years, and I think they are valuable no matter subjective or not. These linked articles increased my understanding for the NEU among different commentators or review agencies, and TomSr has certainly contributed his efforts of providing this information, so please don’t be discouraged of providing your inputs.

i chose northeastern over emory justsaying

There are lots of factors to consider, not just ranking. Financial support, quality of the specific program, co-op, international, etc. could all be reasons for choosing a college over a higher ranked alternative.

haha Interesting article, but I closed in when I read that Wash U’s only top major was pre-med. Their business school is amazing.

I think a big point, mentioned above, is that once you’re out of the top-top schools (like Ivies), rank matters less and less. I’d very confidently guess, for instance, that a lot more students choose between BU and Northeastern because of the campus, style, major, etc than because of rank or acceptance rate.

Interesting article, but I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s the new new ivy. It’s certainly not the same as Northwestern, though people often get those schools confused lol.

If I had a nickel for every time someone made that mistake…

Or
Harvard and Hartford
Stanford and Samford
Ivy and Ivey
Berkeley School of Music and UC Berkeley

etc.

Also a lot of mail order universities use names that are meant to confuse people, like Columbia Pacific University vs Columbia University.
