Northeastern Chances?

As of right now Northeastern is my #1 school. I really loved the emphasis placed on co-op that was presented during my visit. I was wondering what my chances were of getting in (and potentially qualifying for a scholarship)

I’ll be applying EA

GPA: 4.0
Rank : 1/140
APs : World History (5), US History (5), Statistics (4), Biology, Calculus AB, Italian, English Lit
SAT : 1500 (760 M, 740 CR/W)
ACT : 32 composite
SAT II : 730 Bio M 720 World History
ECs :

Mock Trial (10)
NHS (11-12)
Foreign Language NHS (11-12)
Volunteering at soup kitchens, tutoring, nursing home, etc (9-12)
Scholar Institute (10-12)
Bible Club (11-12)
Environmental Club (10; president)

Also I’m NMSF (which I know makes me eligible for a NMF scholarship as long as I progress)

I’d say Northeastern is an easy target. Your stats are similar to mine, but I’m not an NMSF, unfortunately. I’m applying EA, you should too!

Good luck.

Thank you! Good luck to you as well!

My kid had about your stats (just slightly higher) and good ECs and got in with $20,000 in merit aid.

@SouthernHope $20k per year or 20k total? And how did this combine with non-merit aid?

$20,000 per year (we didn’t qualify for financial aid so i’m not sure how that part works.)

I had a 32 ACT and very similar extra curriculars (no NMSF) but 3.75 unwieghted GPA and got $10k/year

I have identical stats as you and many people have told me that I am likely to be deferred. I hope that everyone else in this thread is correct because I hope we both get in!

How merit works at most schools is:

  • University is not need blind
  • They consider top students with no financial need for merit, and this denies admission for some less well performing students who have equivalent need

It is very helpful for some top middle-class students who might not otherwise be able to afford the school for whatever reason, but it also discourages socioeconomic diversity to some extent.

“but it also discourages socioeconomic diversity to some extent.”

I disagree with this statement. Schools that offer FA and Full pay only don’t get an entire group of “bubble” students that are too rich for FA and too poor for full pay.

@suzyQ7

I wasn’t saying this was the only group that takes advantage of merit. But these are the people for whom merit may be the most valuable.

And by offering merit, Northeastern does have to become more need sensitive in admissions, as they now meet full need for all accepted domestic students.

It’s a trade off, not something purely bad or purely good. I’m sure they’ve thought about it.
