Published admission rate for Fall 2023 class
My experience with the NU Parents group is that people donât usually post online to say their kids got co-ops without difficulty, which plenty of students do, and was my childâs experience twice.
My daughter will be living in the sheraton this year and Iâm trying to figure out a weekly or monthly budget for her to spend on meals. We are thinking we will get the profiler meal plan for maybe 25 or 50 meals instead of the weekly meal plan and we can repurchase if she uses it but she is a second year and doesnât expect to use the meal plan much. I think she will eat mainly at the prudential center or places near campus. Wondering if you recall a general budget that worked for your daughter? Just trying to get an idea of whatâs reasonable and fair!
I gave my daughter a budget of $500/month, and she had no problems staying within that amount. I told her if she went over, it came out of her bank account, but if she came in under, she could keep the difference, and that motivated her to spend it wisely. She was right at $500 each month. We were required to buy the 7-meal plan, which worked out well to meet friends for lunch on campus when she was in between classes. Otherwise she got some groceries or picked up a quick breakfast on the way to class, and she ate at the Pru or on Newbury with her friends for dinners. The total of $500 x 3.5 months plus the cost of the 7-meal plan adds up to exactly the cost of the unlimited meal plan ⊠but without waiting in long lines at the dining hall for food that wasnât really all that great. As she said, she probably would have wanted to eat out with her friends at least a few times a week even if she had a full meal plan, but this way she could do it on momâs credit card!
Both of my Dâs had NU housing apartments their sophomore years so they had kitchens and cooked mostly, but we did buy one 25 meal profilers primarily for convenience. However, if your are looking at costs, the profiler is ONLY worthwhile for dinners. Otherwise it is much better to pay a La carte for breakfast and lunch, or husky dollars. My younger D was an arch major and in studio late many nights, in ruggles, so the profiler worked for dinners at IV. Otherwise, Iâd say $100-$150 per week of eating out mostly and given prices now.
Thank you for this info. Very helpful. And itâs great that they have so many good options nearby. Itâs a good opportunity for learning to budget but at the same time I donât want her to feel overly stressed about it. This gives me a good idea of what to expect!
I keep debating the profiler or just having her pay a la Carte for the dining hall, but Iâm thinking if she doesnât have the profiler, she might not go at all as paying $20 out of pocket might not seem worth it when sheâs on her own budget. Seems like itâs a good fallback if she has to stay on campus over a meal so a low meal profiler could be a bit off a cushion. Sheâll also be on coop second semester so wonât likely be eating much on campus at that point.
