Hi everyone! I would appreciate if someone could help me. Northeastern is one of my top choice schools and I applied early action. Today the results came out and I actually got deferred and will find out my decision as regular decision after I report my grades from 1st semester senior year. I want to know, can people still get into college after they got deferred? Or is it simply that if you get deferred you basically have no chance of getting in anyways since the admissions people are second guessing themselves??
THANKS!
Many deferred EA applicants ae admitted RD and many of them receive merit aid if their stats are good.
I was deferred EA and am really hoping to be accepted RD. I will write a deferral letter to admissions and send in some SAT Subject Test scores that I didn’t have when I originally applied, but is there anything else I can do to help enhance my application and possibly obtain merit aid?
My D was deferred last year in EA. She followed up with an email to her admission counselor. She used it as an opportunity to answer “why northeastern “ since they don’t require a separate essay. She kept it to the point but expressed that neu was her absolute top choice and she would absolutely go if accepted. She was ultimately accepted in RD and given a great financial package that made it possible! So don’t give up!
That’s very helpful! I sent an email as well to my counselor. Hopefully it works; fingers crossed!
Son from International school was also deferred. Realized that he did not submit ACT scores and contacted admissions and was told SAT and ACT are not reviewed or considered for international students. I guess we should have noticed this during the application process since it is on the website. A pity though since his SAT and ACT scores were better than GPA. However, he did have many 5s on AP scores, which they do accept. I am not sure of the rationale for not accepting SAT/ACT from international students. Any ideas as to the rationale?
@asij2018 ^ So they can accept full pay, lower SAT/ACT scoring (English not being their first language) international students.
The full pay international students help defer the costs of high stats domestic students via merit scholarships and financial aid.
Northeastern does not have a huge endowment like Harvard or others so the scholarship money has to come from tuition.
I got deferred from EA too! My counselor told me I should write a letter of continued interest which I definitely want to do… Northeastern is one of my top choices but I’m not 100% sure that if I got in I would go which makes writing the letter hard. I want to tell them that I would go if I got in but I’d kind of be lying because I’m not completely sure. Should I just write that I would go if I got in? Or should I tell them that they’re one of my top choices? Please help! I don’t know what to write!!
@dlamte I wrote “one of my top choices”
ok thanks
@suzyQ7 I never thought of that but it would make sense that deferring a large portion would help them to manage their pool of RD applicants altogether to better to model their revenue. However, the policy of not considering and not even reviewing SAT/ACT for all international kids does result in chasing off high stat full pay students as well. Perhaps that is also why they require the students to opt-in on deferral and recommend a personal interest letter. Thank you for your reply.
I also got deferred and decided to write a letter of continued interest. What would be the best way to send it? Should I email my admissions counselor, mail it, or upload it as a document on my status update page?
I recommend both emailing and uploading your letter. Good luck!
