Northeastern for pre-med?

I got accepted to Northeastern for fall 2011 for Bouvee, my major would be Health Science, but i'm planning on taking a pre-med track.

Can anyone talk about pre-med at northeastern especially for health science majors.

I know the co-cops will help alot when it comes to experience and recommendations + the early assurance program with Tufts School of Medicine makes NU appear to be a #1 for pre-med students, but what makes pre med at NU worhtwhile compared to a school like BU, whihc has a medical school attached?

You said it yourself. What makes it worthwhile is the hands-on work experience. That’s what would set you apart from say, a pre-med biology major.

Lots and LOTS of pre-med kids don’t graduate as pre-med. It has lots to do with their priorities, the workload, ect ect… Keep that in mind. Co-op would get you a real sense of what you could be doing after med school.

I will also be a premed at northeastern but at the college of science as a biology major. What’s the difference between being a premed at the college of health science and the college of science? Does one have an advantage over the other??

I know several neu students who went on to med school and have a lot of classmates currently applying. The successful ones a) got really good grades, b) got at least a 30 on the MCAT, c) utilized co-op and all the opportunities that neu/boston offer. Co-op is definitely going to give you a leg up in med admissions, as far as ECs go, and ECs can really make or break an application. But, GPA/MCAT rule all.

Honestly, I hate to be the barer of bad news, but health sciences is not the greatest major for a pre-med. Health sciences is more geared toward students interested in public health, PA school, or nursing school. The courseload isn’t rigorous enough, and med schools prefer to see harder science electives (molecular cell, neurobiology, biochem) rather than the health science electives (american health care systems, blah blah blah). You can check into CC’s pre-med forum to get other opinions on this, but I’ve heard it from a LOT of sources. If you choose to stay health sciences, take tough bio classes as electives, not the easier “health” classes, and definitely talk to the pre-med advisors at neu right away to make sure you’re making the right choices.

Bio is a good major for medical school, and as long as you do the work (get that 3.6+, get that 30+, have awesome ECs), you’ll be fine.

i was actually wondering this also, I’m going to be a health science major and am hoping to go to med school, the electives part makes sense but i mean as long as i take all the pre reqs, and do well in them it won’t make all that much difference right? plus couldn’t i potentially get more hands on coops being a health sci major in terms of patients? where as a bio major would be more research geared? or am i completely off?

bump. is it preferable to do a hard science major at northeastern rather than the health science college for pre-med?

The debate about what to major in for pre-med is a never-ending discussion. Either one will prepare you for med school applications. You could even major in French if you wanted, as long as you meet the specific course requirements of the schools you’re applying to.

I know of one student that applied for nursing and was only accepted pre-med. They told them…they could transfer 2nd year into nursing program…it never happened. The old bait and switch technique.

… How is that relevant to this discussion, Collegetiger? Also, what they probably told him was that he could apply to transfer in second year. If it was really a guaranteed transfer after 1 year, why not accept them in the first place?
