Northeastern Honors College

Hi, I will be attending Northeastern next year either way, but I am still just a little confused as to why I was not admitted to the Honors program at Northeastern. I applied and was accepted early action with a 4.3 GPA, a 1430 SAT, and a ton of extracurricular leadership positions (President of NHS, President of Science NHS, founder of a few clubs, etc.). I am going to be an engineering student and received merit aid so it isn’t a huge deal but I was just the slightest bit offended that I was not accepted into the program and other kids at my school with less were accepted to it. I just was wondering what the requirements were I suppose. Thanks!

The Honors college is pretty tough to get into - while u have good GPA, ur SAT is a bit low, I believe the avg ACT for Honors is 34 (1540 ish SAT) just my opinion

This isn’t confirmed, but I believe that acceptance and scholarships are handled at a schoolwide level while honors are handled by each individual college. I think it’s why some people get honors and no scholarship, and some get a scholarship and no honors. It also means that you’re competing to be the top 10% of the students in the college of engineering, which may have more high stat kids.

It could also just be a holistic view that you can’t reason about with stats.

Regardless, the program is a really more of a perk than anything else, and you shouldn’t take offense to any admissions decision from any college given its competitiveness and subjectiveness.

If you want to be in honors badly, people have had success appealing before freshman year or applying to join starting sophomore year. I would note the extra requirements, though. For me, honors would have actually been more of a negative than a positive, as it would have interfered with my academic plan flexibility.

@PengsPhils Thank you I feel a lot better after reading that. Flexibility is a priority of mine so that’s good to hear
