Northeastern or Arizona State Computer Science?

I have recently been accepted into the computer science programs at both of these universities, however I am unsure about how to decide between the two. It seems that for most of the time Northeastern is ranked higher as a univeristy in general, however when it comes to the CS program it goes either way according to many rankings. I haven’t seen any direct comparison between the two. I know there are many other factors that differentiate the schools, but right now im more focused on academics betweent the schools.

Here’s a good thread that will cover the NEU side in more detail. The linked to essay there is the true best overview of the program, even if a bit technical:

In terms of Arizona, it has a fine program, but I don’t think it will give you the advantages in teaching (as far as I know, I’m not an ASU expert), location (easier to get jobs when companies are close, lots of tech in Boston), and experience (from said co-ops) that Northeastern will.

Of course, as you mentioned, all other factors should be in play too.

CS rankings are often done on graduate rankings, which are very research focused and don’t consider a lot of factors that affect undergraduate experience like teaching and postgrad outcomes in industry. It’s a good general guide but specific ranks really don’t matter unless you want to go into academia, in which case they matter a bit more. Still, even by research, Northeastern is very strong.

The site below simply looks at research output. In the last 10 years, Northeastern is 17, ASU is 41. Again, not very important, but even if you the academic route, I think it has the edge by a good margin over ASU.

I’m of course very biased as I help teach the introductory course here and am a student :stuck_out_tongue:

I’d be happy to answer any more specific questions if you have them
