Northeastern or Holy Cross

I'm accepted to both and I'm having trouble making a decision. I really like both schools. I don't know what I want to do yet as a major so there isn't one aspect of any particular program at either school I am persuaded by.

Personally, I think HC is the academically more rigorous school although you certainly can get a good education at either place. If you can visit the two schools one more time that could help you decide. I would also try to look at the many difference between the schools and consider which is the better fit for you. Ex. Location (do you want to go to college in a major city or not? Do you want a Jesuit school or not? Does the 5 year coop program appeal to you? Do you prefer a larger university or a smaller LAC? Are there any majors or interests you have that can only be pursued at one of the schools? Is there a price differential that could sway you one way or another?

I got good financial aid packages from both of them. Northeastern would end up costing about 10 grand more over four years than holy cross. I love boston and would love living there at northeastern but I also hear HC has shuttles constantly to both Boston and Providence. The co-op appeals to me but I don’t know what I want to do yet so that kind of concerns me because it seems to be very career oriented and looked down upon to be undeclared. I feel like I’m leaning Holy Cross but I still feel like I would be passing up a great opportunity at Northeastern. On the other hand, I would feel like I’m passing up a great opportunity at HC if I went to Northeastern. If I were to be leaning towards a major it would be something in the sciences, possibly psychology or a biology or something like that.

Do you like the outdoors? Would you rather run on concrete sidewalks or wooded dirt trail? How do you feel about size, do you have preferences? Faculty ratios? class size?

I like that HC is secluded from worcester. I like HC’s campus better and I think I really do overall like the school better. It is a cheaper option too. My parents are just concerned about the whole getting a job after college thing and think Northeastern would be better for that. Is that necessarily true?

The schools are comparable, I would pick Holy Cross because it has a campus and more of a community feel (and it’s cheaper)

I would say that while reputation-wise they are similar, not comparable in terms of size and focus. HC is strictly undergrad and Northeastern is known for the co-ops… HC is Great campus, but Worcester has much to be desired. My daughter was very interested in HC at first but then grew concerned with size and some of the social scene. We were in Boston today for admitted students to BU and you cannot beat Boston for diversity and a strong college community. Science is pretty good at HC - I don’t know about Northeastern. Yes, HC has shuttles but Northeastern is right there. So, it may come down to the environment and flexibility in majors.

HC has much more small community feel and the alumni are very devoted to the college and are in the top ten in the nation for alumni giving. Northeastern is more like going to a trade school and the school is many times larger and not a tight knit community with many commuters.

Few commuters at Northeastern and definitely not a “trade school”.

Agree. Northeastern is getting harder and harder to get into. It is a full college experience in Boston.

In the end it comes down to personal preference. To me it sounds like you prefer the size, atmosphere etc. of HC so I’d go there and look for internships over the summer since there is no coop program.

Thanks everyone for the help! I ended up choosing Holy Cross although it was a very difficult decision!

Congratulations, OP. I hope you thrive there.

Great choice

Congrats OP, was reading through and ready to comment that it sounds like HC is/was the option for you, and I opened this thread as someone committed to Northeastern. Enjoy!
