@onmyway Your scores are not bad but not a sure thing for all majors at UMass. If your scholarship is just for tuition and does not cover the curriculum fee then you probably have to pay a lot to go to UMass, like 25K.
UMass #76 cough cough not 78… Anyway, I would certainly check your aid package for NEU but I suspect UMass will be the MUCH better value in the long run. It is gradually climbing in the rankings every year so ultimately it’s “value” perhaps is getting better every year as well. Lastly, with those stats you would be very average in the CS program at UMass, I think it would be a good match.
Sorry what is the CS program exactly? I’m not very up to date with all the lingo on this forum lol. I also am leaning toward UMass being a better decision in the long run.
@onmyownway - CS is computer science, the top programs at UMass usually are the STEM fields like CS, engineering and a few others.(Many non-STEM programs are ranked well also) Also, the undergraduate business school is #35 in the nation according to Bloomberg.
Thanks. Yeah I was looking toward something business related, or something in the biology/medical field.
Northeastern used to be a safety, but that has changed, so if your school has data that is 5-15 years old (as ours does), it’s probably a bit skewed. Remember, it isn’t just applicants from MA you are competing with–it’s applicants from all over the country, and the world, and the best high schools from all 50 states.
1910 is very low for Northeastern admission this year. Here is who is being admitted: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/northeastern-university/1740832-stats-of-accepted-students-please-p1.html
If you can get a hold of the common data set, that would be a much better indicator than naviance or whatever system your school uses.
Take the ACT. You might test better on it. Many do. Good luck.
Yeah I know, these stats are from 2008-2014. Also, it may be a tad lower because my high school is quite close in proximity to NU, and it is considered one of the best high schools in the state as many, many students go to schools like Yale, Harvard, Cornell etc. Whatever though, that’s besides the point. I guess the question is debt vs. prestige?
Northeastern is the better school, but DO NOT take out over $100k in debt to attend ANY school, even Harvard or MIT.
MIT I would be tempted too take out that $$$. lol But… Yes I agree, 100k is a massive sum for a new college grad and it basically kills any chances at Grad school unless you get a huge scholarship. (UMass is also totally underrated IMO because MA has so many top schools, personally I think the education there is comparable to schools like BU)
Also, NU does have good co-op though, but this is the only big advantage that I can see. (Certainly not worth 100k though) lol
I don’t see a huge difference in prestige. NU isn’t Harvard and UMass is very underrated within Mass.
Don’t take 100K in debt (except maybe Stanford).
Agreed.
Not sure why a decision needs to be made now anyway. Apply to both, compare financial aid packages… go to the school that will get you a quality education with the least debt.
