I’ve been accepted to both Northeastern and UT Austin for Civil Engineering for Fall 2015. They are both my top choice universities, so I’m having trouble deciding which university I should I attend. I am an international student with no scholarships or grants, so they’re both equally as expensive. UT Austin is higher ranked than Northeastern in Civil Engineering, but Northeastern tops UT Austin for smaller classes and of course the Co-Op program. I’m from a country with hot weather all year round so going to Boston would be a huge change since it gets very cold in the winter. I’ve visited Boston and toured Northeastern’s campus, but I haven’t visited Austin yet. Can anyone please help me? Thank you!
Visit Austin and then you can really compare which one you liked better
Currently 72 degrees Fahrenheit in Austin. Great city, great school.
Northeastern. tbh I don’t know much about UT Austin but most of my friends there are transferring out. and coop does indeed give NU an edge over UT. I am also from a very warm country and the weather is not as bad as it seems. If anything the snow and cold makes for some pretty fun distressing. Weather aside, boston is actually one of the best if not the best places to live for a college student. Especially and international one. The diversity here is mind blowing and this shows in the immense volume of opportunities we have available.
Depends on what you are looking for. UT is top notch and very picky about where faculty went to school and the nature of their research. I am guessing (with limited knowledge) that NU is more practical with UT falling in the more academic/theoretical side.
I am from Texas - and faced a similar dilemma, although mine was a bit different due to my major being Business.
UT-Austin is a great school, but it’s public and huge. UT is mainly filled with Texans due to a ridiculous Texas law that says if you are top 8% (ranked by GPA) of your high school’s graduating class you are AUTOMATICALLY admitted into UT. In my opinion, this kinda devalues it a little bit.
Northeastern is a great school, a really nice size, and private!
I love Texas, and Austin is very young. The bars are also far more lax on IDs (I really hope this alone doesn’t persuade you).
I had really never experienced cold/snow before coming to Northeastern. It wasn’t bad at all, and I really enjoy sending snapchats of 6 foot high snow banks to my friends back in Texas.
Good luck and CONGRATULATIONS! Both UT and Northeastern are top tier schools
Best of luck
There is a coop option at UT. I know a kid doing it. I do not know how easy it is to get into, however.
@southernhusky16 I actually don’t drink or party because of religious reasons, so that didn’t persuade me at all! But thank you so much! I’m currently doing a pro/con list with both universities, so I’m still deciding.
@Lizardly Oh really? Then I have to look that up! Thank you so much!
Almost every school has the option to do co-ops, but it’s usually not as structured and part of the curriculum as Northeastern. The co-op advisors, job database, connections with employers, and integration into the curriculum and school culture are part of what make Northeastern’s co-op program successful.
