Northeastern Orchestra

Hi CCers! I was just wondering if anyone knows any information (difficulty of music, schedule, prestige, etc) about Northeastern's Symphony Orchestra. I'm going to be a freshman in the fall and I'm interested in joining the Orchestra as an EC even though I'm not a music major (I'm actually a nursing major). I've been playing violin since I was 5 so I'd like to continue in college, but I'm having a difficult time finding opinions on NUSO. Any info would be appreciated! Thanks!

from the music department website:

Orchestra is an extracurricular activity, but can also be taken as a free 1-credit elective by registering for MUSC 1906. This course may be repeated for credit.

You can definitely do Orchestra as an EC at NU. And if you are very talented, and agree to participate in the Orchestra, you can get a renewable scholarship.

I’m involved in Wind Ensemble, which, along with Symphony Orchestra, Concert Band, and Pep Band, is part of NU Bands.
Northeastern doesn’t have music majors, so the groups are made entirely of students like you: those who enjoy playing and want to continue to do so. This also means it is of lower intensity than you’d find at a music school, but I still think it’s a really good experience and they definitely play some interesting music!
The group does have auditions, I believe, but this is mostly for the purpose of determining parts. All the music groups also try to create a sense of community, with events for group members and such (Wind Ensemble is going to see the Boston Philharmonic in a few weeks).
I’m not sure exactly what to say about prestige. It’s a pretty open group, so there are a variety of skill levels, but they really do aspire to perform good music, and they succeed!
My recommendation? Go for it! They will probably have an open rehearsal or two at the start of the semester, and you can get a good sense of the group there, as well.
