D was accepted for NUin. Bio major. 1520 SATs (790 Math). Strong ECs. Varsity sport. Music diploma. 4.0 un-weighted. 12 APs incl senior year. Five 5s, two 4s in APs so far. Paid Internships and jobs for over 4 years. No $ offered by NU hence probably won’t be going here. She has better offers incl honors track from other great schools. NU seems to be rejecting or waitlisting accomplished students with high stats from what I am reading here. Congrats to those who were accepted and wishing everyone else the very best in finding a great fit with minimal debt.
That’s using 62K applications, not 65K, which most people seem to be saying.
@alexa2143 I noticed that you were deciding between UMD and NEU for business. My daughter is in a similar situation deciding on Wisco and NEU for business. I’m very curious how you integrated into college post NUin. Was it difficult to make new friends on campus in January? Are you spending the majority of your free time with the NUin students from Greece? Where did you get placed for housing? Do you have a freshman roommate? Thanks!
@TomSrOfBoston- waitlisted and NMF- does changing my NMF school hurt my chances of getting in waitlisted- NU still my first choice, but if it doesn’t work out then I lose any NMF $ opportunity at another school sort of a catch 22 I guess- I would think if I got in off the waitlist there would be no NMF$ from NU
I see some who did not select NUin were placed anyways- is it possible to add your willingness to do NU in if your waitlisted and did not previously check it ?
@wheatonmom Yes, I was!! Personally, I didn’t find it hard to make new friends in January, especially in the business school where you do so much group work and presentations. I can’t speak for other majors, but for business, in the beginning, many of your classes will be with other NUin students because the students in the fall took the main intro classes (intro to business, accounting, etc.), but I do have some non-NUin people in my classes (and after the first semester of being in Boston, you’ll have NUin and non-NUin people). A lot of the friends that I’ve made are from other NUin sites because we have the same schedule, but it’s not difficult to meet new people. I’d say I spend my time pretty evenly with my Greece friends and friends that I’ve made since being here. It really depends on the people that end up going abroad; some of the countries were a lot closer than others.
For housing, you get to fill out a survey indicating whether you want to be in a freshman dorm, suite, or apartment (except keep in mind that they can’t fulfill everyone’s requests) and potential roommate requests. I got placed in one of the freshman dorms, so I do have a freshman roommate that I didn’t know prior to getting here, mainly because I really wanted to have that traditional first year experience in a dorm. But the majority of people choose to live in apartments with their NUin friends, or in IV. There aren’t as many vacancies in freshman dorms as there are in the sophomore/upperclassmen housing, just because that’s where people move out when they go on co-op.
Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions (:
I was accepted Regular Decision with a major in Economics and Business. I’m from Rhode Island.
My SAT is 1400 and my GPA is 3.9 (4.75 weighted).
I am very surprised. I applied to Northeastern on a whim and I was only thinking of it as a safety school, but now I am happy I got accepted.
@alexa2143 That was very helpful! I have more questions;) Was Greece your first choice? What classes did you take in Greece? Any business offerings? Does being in Nuin mean your first coop will be spring of sophomore year?
I’ve heard of a few cases of freshman being placed with upperclassmen and I understand that there are more openings in that situation. Have any of your NUin friends been placed in apartments with all upperclassmen? Are there any other NUin locations for business that you would highly recommend?
What do you do on the weekends? My daughter thinks that the social opportunities at Northeastern won’t be as numerous as her other choice. So many questions! I really appreciate you taking the time to answer them.
Accepted into the computer engineering major at the college of engineering
northeastern is my dream school and I am so excited to attend it.
Here are my stats for reference
ACT: 31(think it was my weakest point)
SAT: did no take it
GPA: international so no gpa however had an overall of 95% in my final year
ECs: have played keyboard in various concerts, was a member of the student council, played chess throughout high
school and even went for nationals. was a member of the schools environment club and received many prizes in
tournaments for badminton and table tennis and swimming.
Also received a national merit scholarship from my educational board in 10th grade
Essays: Good i guess…
Totally did not expect to get in but congratulations to all who got in and best of luck to all who were rejected/waitlisted
Don’t quite understand the contiNU e plan either
@wheatonmom yeah of course, no problem!! I was deciding between a couple countries (Italy, Germany, Greece), Greece being one of them because I had never been and had always seen so many amazing pictures/most people don’t study abroad in Greece so it’s a unique opportunity, and ultimately decided on Greece. The other countries do fill up quickly (last year, Australia filled up within the first week of April, but last year, did not offer business). You do get email notifications when countries begin to approach capacity. Greece is a larger group of students because it doesn’t fill up, so that’s something to keep in mind. London and Rome had a lot of business majors, so I’d look into those as well if you’re unsure about Greece.
We took some classes that were directly for business (ie. Microeconomics, Business Calc) and some that fulfilled NUpath requirements (English), and if you had AP credit/prior college credit, then you could take some electives (Psych, Business Stats, etc.) that would also fulfill other requirements. You put in preferences for your co-op cycle, so being in NUin doesn’t affect that; some go the spring semester of sophomore year, and others choose the fall semester of your 3rd year.
Yes, a lot my NUin friends that chose to live in apartments did get placed with upperclassmen (a lot of them were sophomores), because their roommates moved out for the semester to go on co-op, which none of them really minded.
On weekends, I usually hang out with friends and do homework during the day, and go out later if I have time. I would say there are definitely a lot of social opportunities on Fridays/the weekends, but my honest answer is that social life at NU is 100% what you make of it. Some choose to be part of the going out/frat/Greek life scene and go MIT/BU/NU frat parties, but some also just hang out and explore Boston because there’s always something to do/explore new places. It’s definitely not a traditional school setting that’s revolved around partying, but it’s definitely there. Hockey games are another thing that are really fun to go to. You’re definitely never bored being in Boston (another thing is that you will basically always have homework/exams in the business school, so don’t go into this expecting a light/ordinary workload). But the great part about NU is that you’re in such a central location of Boston, and Newbury Street and the Prudential Center are so close (around a 10 minutes walk from the freshman dorms).
rejected, sat 1450, 5 APs, 4.1 gpa. biology major. class rank 50/360. I’m not surprised with the rejection. I’m wondering if my common app essay has anything to do with it bc it’s about my experiences in national parks and nature and I also admit in it that I’m not completely sure what I want to do with my life except that I want to protect the national parks and nature and blah blah blah. I’m thinking that 1. NEU is in the city and I talk about my love of hiking and being in nature throughout my essay. 2. Northeastern seems to be the type of school that benefits people who are pretty certain what they want to do with their life and want to get a lot of professional experience right away. I mean obviously my GPA and class rank were probably the main reason but do you think they would’ve read the essay and thought… yeah she’s not a good fit
@rachel97437 Northeastern does advertise the Explore/undeclared program, and students definitely change majors at least as much as at any other school, but in my personal opinion Northeastern is not the best place for someone that is unsure of their potential career path just because of the emphasis on work experience and experiential education. In your case I think it’s probably a blessing and NU wouldn’t have been the best place even if you had gotten in. With your scores I’m sure you’ll get into schools on par with NU or even better and find somewhere you’ll fit well.
rejected for business
1440 sat & 3.7 GPA
Accepted RD to NU.in program! Computer Science
SAT: 1380
GPA: 8/10
Rank: n/a
A very good essay about a project regarding Machine learning and medicine
Very good recommendations
I didn’t take any AP (Not offered in my school)
3rd prize and finalist on national programming contests as well as national finalist of Microsoft Imagine Cup.
My application, in general, was more oriented towards entrepreneurship rather than academic achievements.
I haven’t seen anything regarding scholarships in my status portal, so I’m not sure if I will attend since I can’t afford that money.
Congratulations to those who got accepted and good luck for them who didn’t each university looks for different things!
Rejected
SAT: 1510 (800M, 710W)
GPA: 4.07w
Female, OOS
Lots of ECs w/ leadership positions + awards
Kind of caught me off guard as I was well within the accepted range on Naviance, so I’m not sure what happened.
Congrats to those accepted and good luck to everyone else!
My kid got waitlisted, CompSci. My stepdaughter got in via ED 2 years ago.
He had 1540 SAT, 35 ACT, 3.75UW/4.3W, 10 AP classes, all 4s and 5s with a ton of junior college classes
Oh well, only reason he applied was because of his stepsister. Backup school (sour grapes).
deferred EA then rejected RD
1350 SAT, 3.85 GPA, 6 APs, 2 varsity sports, other clubs, international school in asia
I think it’s gotten significantly harder because a few years ago at my school they would accept 35 people & you could easily get in with a 3.2 and 1100… this year myself & many other kids in my grade were rejected and quite surprised, because northeastern has always accepted after deferrals at my school. oh well
@ProfessorPlum168 did he visit? I feel that they are taking interest more into account now.
International Student from London U.K.
Accepted into Honours Program with $16k/year merit scholarship. BioEngineering Major.

I only decided to apply to the U.S. in October 2017 after missing out on my dream university in the U.K., my parents were educated in the UK so the whole process felt very strange. I had not heard of NorthEastern until seeing an article published by their researchers.
