Northeastern RD 2022

@remier18340

That would have been 25 years ago.

The acceptance seem all over the place some ivy caliber people rejected or waitlisted- some with much lower stats accepted - yes it’s a wholistic approach, but as the saying goes you are what your record says you are - it’s a bit eye opening that out of 12-14k acceptances, they only anticipate 2800 enrollments- I wonder if there is some statistical evaluation based on gpa/sat and geographical location that predicts this for them

@quinntheeskimo All colleges use algorithms to predict yield. Last year Northeastern’s yield rate was 21%, higher than predicted resulting in a 300 student over enrolment. It looks like they are taking a conservative approach this year.

@quinntheeskimo - agree - my D was deferred at EA and now accepted into NU.In in RD round - her stats are lower than the average with 3.96 GPA, 29 ACT but very strong ECs (lots of leadership) and strong essay. Letter of continued interest may have helped along with visiting the campus again back in Feb but still was expecting a rejection. Though I also suspect NEU are looking at the $$ as we are also full pay situation - no FA or merit scholarships. Waiting on a few more colleges in RD round next week before making final decision - going to be tough though to accept NEU at full pay when D has merit offers from other good schools on the table.

@TomSrOfBoston it was actually 2 or 3 years ago at my school. it used to be extremely easy to get into. I go to an international school in asia & they used to accept almost everyone that applied- about 35/45 applicants. I’m speaking from literal scatterplots and data from my school- all you needed was a 3.2 and an 1100 and you got in.

@remier18340 SAT/ACT scores are not looked at for international applicants.

@futurenurse77 My daughter is a nursing major and was accepted to NUin

It seems like the NUin thing is a money grab. Kind of a turn off. And it also looks like full pay kids with lower stats get accepted to NU. Nothing wrong with that I guess but….

@fashionella

That is true at most colleges with less than a $5 billion endowment. northeastern meets full demonstrated need but they are need aware.

I am feeling the same way fashionella… saddened especially for my son …

I got in but I saw nothing regarding scholarship in my decision letter. Is it possible that I am missing any document? I mean, maybe I just didn’t get any kind of aid but it is an important factor.

Not sure why everyone is so down on NU.IN. My D was excited to check the box for an opportunity to go abroad for her first semester. She is not a “lower stats” student and has already spent time abroad in China on a State Department scholarship to learn Mandarin. This is a great program for the right student and it should not be viewed as a back door into NU. It may not be what other students chose for themselves and they will have to decide if it is right for them, but if selected I’m sure few will regret their decisions. We still have other schools to hear back from, but NU is currently at the top even with a much higher price. My D has been offered merit from other schools but NU’s co-op program will more than make up for the difference over the years of her career. Her father attributes his success to the NU co-op program and that has put us in a position to pay the extra costs now. NU is worth every dime.

@Brunov Northeastern awards merit with acceptance notification. What was your SAT?

@Brunov Merit would be a separate tab in the results portal.

The entire school is a money grab

@chipperd Northeastern is a private university, no state subsidy, limited endowment. Where do you suggest that the cost of operating the university come from?

Accepted with a major in Behavioral Neuroscience! NU was one of my top choices, so I’m thrilled I was accepted given how competitive it was this year.

Stats:

SAT: 1550 (790 ERW, 760 M), didn’t take ACT
GPA: 3.96 UW
From VT
APs: Biology (4, submitted), U.S. History (3, didn’t submit)
ECs: Not great, probably weakest part of my application: mostly music-related, summer programs that showed interest in medicine, varsity tennis (4yrs), Scholar’s Bowl captain,
Essay: I think it was pretty good, my guidance counselor really liked it
Recommendations: Solid overall, I haven’t read any of them but 2 out of the 3 I think were great

Since I’m a little late on this thread, here are my other decisions I’ve received so far (including this acceptance):
Accepted: UVM, NU
Waitlisted: WASHUSTL, JHU, UChicago
Rejected: None yet!

When I got rejected from NU I thought my chances for UCLA were over but I got in!

Still wish I could’ve gotten in as I would’ve chosen NU over UCLA but no harm done.
