***northeastern regular decision 2022 results***

Hey guys! Let’s make a thread so it’s easier for kids in future years to look and find them. I know it helped me last year! I found this format off of another schools page so it doesn’t include NUin, so just note that if that is your case. Please only post results

Weaknesses: essay, SAT (no Honors College :()
Why you think you were accepted: probably my GPA pulled me through
Where else were you accepted: So far accepted into UVM, UConn, and UNH (deferred from Harvard)

General Comments : I am shocked! So many bright kids are getting waitlisted or rejected in place of superstars that most likely applied to NEU as a “safety” without caring much (as many of my friends did). Northeastern needs to clean up their act and start finding the students that care!

@anxiouswreck congrats!! I’ve seen you in the NU threads the past few months and remembered your username lol glad to hear that you got in!!

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: English Professor from Freshman and Sophomore year (Presumaby a 8-10, had a great relationship with the professor and helped compile debate guidlines for her classroom debates even after I stopped taking classes with her. Didn’t have a more recent English teacher because homeschooled and exhausted English classes at community college by the end of Sophomore year)

Teacher Rec #2: Chemistry Professor from Junior year (Presumably an 8-10, had a great relationship with the professor. Went to office hours, participated in class, did well in Lab, had a 95+ exam average, and was exempt from taking the final)

Counselor Rec:
Additional Rec: Employer who has two degrees from NEU, worked very closely together for robotic sailing instruction, presumably a 9-10)

General Comments :

Decision: Waitlist

Applied (ED,EA,RD): RD

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 760M, 760E
SAT II: 780MII, 730C (didn’t send)
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0UW
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Ranked by decile, top 10%
AP (place score in parenthesis): Human Geography (5), English Lang (5)
Senior Year Course Load: APs - Physics I, Chem, Music Theory, Calculus BC, Art History. Others are honors orchestra, engineering, and choir.
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): qualified to attend international Russian Olympiad, couldn’t attend. Don’t know if this is considered major, it mostly just sounds good.

Subjective:

Extracurriculars: lots of music stuff mixed with electronics. Played piano at Carnegie Hall, have done a lot of district/regional music festivals. Run a YouTube channel that posts classical music with scores, wrote programs to automate most of the process.

Essays (rating 1-10, details): Common App was okay, maybe a 6/10. Really should’ve spent more time revising, no real issues, but I don’t think I conveyed myself that well.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: Orchestra teacher - 7/10, pretty close, puts a lot of trust in me.
Teacher Rec #2: Engineering teacher - 9/10, did extremely well in class, probably got maybe 2 questions wrong total over two years. Did a lot of extension of what we were doing in the class, knows I am passionate about engineering.
Counselor Rec: Probably pretty cookie-cutter. The first time people in my school have contact with counselors (besides getting in expelled) is to write the rec lmao. Probably just reformatted my resume into paragraphs.
Additional Rec: N/A

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Electrical and Computer Engineering
State (if domestic applicant): PA
School Type: Public

Reflection: Maybe a little surprised based on previous years’ threads, I thought my stats alone gave me a decent shot. Not really bummed, I really liked Northeastern on a surface level, but when I joined online groups with the student body I really didn’t feel like I would be a good fit.

Senior Year Course Load: AP Calc BC, AP Lit, AP Physics 2, AP Gov, Physical Education/Health, Band
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): NHS, AP Scholar (they’re pretty common), and I got an improvised solo award at a national music competition

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Jazz Band (section leader), Jazz Combo (section leader), Orchestra (section leader), NHS Executive Board (Secretary), Quiz Bowl, Physics Club, and All-City Orchestra
Job/Work Experience: N/A
Volunteer/Community service: I’ve been volunteering at a local nursing home for the past 7 years
Summer Activities: various unpaid internships and programs for law, STEM, and the arts
Essays (rating 1-10, details): 9/10, it was about my ancestry and how it made me a more powerful and aware individual.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: It was from my AP Lang teacher and I never saw it, but I’m assuming it’s around a 9/10.
Teacher Rec #2: It was from my Honors Physics teacher from last year and she showed me it. 8/10.
Counselor Rec: I never saw it, but my counselor likes me and we’re close so I’d say around a 7/10.
Additional Rec: N/A

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Management Information Systems
State (if domestic applicant): NY
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Large Public
Ethnicity: White/Middle Eastern
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: I’d prefer not to say.
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Uncommon major?

Reflection

Strengths: EC’s, my Common App essay
Weaknesses: SAT score
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I honestly don’t know. I feel that my stats are on the lower side for NEU and there were so many qualified candidates getting rejected.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: I haven’t been rejected anywhere yet, but I got into the University at Buffalo, University at Albany, Penn State UP, Rutgers NB, Stony Brook University, Binghamton University, Baruch College, SUNY New Paltz, Brooklyn College, Hunter College, College of Staten Island, Queens College, and Northeastern University. I’m still waiting on Columbia, Barnard, Cornell, UPenn, Boston University, and Macaulay Honors College.

General Comments: I’m still shocked that I got in! I was honestly expecting a rejection, but I’m pleasantly surprised by the outcome!

Applied (ED,EA,RD): RD, but for Spring 2019 :frowning:

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 1450; 780 math, 670 reading. Didn’t study, not that that matters.
ACT (breakdown): 32. Don’t know specific section scores atm. Didn’t study for this either, not that that matters.
SAT II: 760 Chem, 710 US, 700 World (didn’t send any of these)
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.6 (at the end of junior year)
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): N/A (school doesn’t do ranking)
Senior Year Course Load: AP Macro, AP Bio, AP Statistics, AP Lit, AP Comp Gov, AP Italian
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Honors Society, National Italian Honors Society, AP Scholar w/ Distinction. Nothing too special.

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Model Congress (I have like a mid-level position here), Forensics Speech and Debate, Varsity Swim (Division I, idk if that means anything), IQ Club, DECA
Job/Work Experience: Worked for parents (bookkeeping and data entry type stuff) and landscaping for friends. I also have my own online business that I recently created selling clothing and such. At the time I submitted my app, it had been running for 3 months and made about $5K in revenues (not enough to pay for NEU, but yeah).
Volunteer/Community service: None. I’m selfish, aren’t I?
Summer Activities: College coursework at a local state university. I took 12 credits, one of which was a 400s (college senior level) course.
Essays (rating 1-10, details): I wrote my common app essay in one day, so that’s that.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: AP Chem. I think it was probably pretty good since I had a really good relationship with this teacher.
Teacher Rec #2: AP Euro. She gave me an idea of what she wrote; I thought it would give admissions a unique perspective on how I approach education, etc. Presumed 10/10.
Counselor Rec: No clue. Let’s just say 7.5/10.
Additional Rec:

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: No
Intended Major: Biochem
State (if domestic applicant): NY
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Large public and very competitive.
Ethnicity: Half Asian, half white.
Gender: M
Income Bracket: >$500,000/yr.
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None. The system’s against me. Lol.

Reflection

Strengths: My schedule is the most rigorous possible at my hs and I have a lot of ECs. My essay and recs were also pretty good I think; they gave a pretty unique “inside look” at who I am.
Weaknesses: Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: My midyear report was HORRIBLE. I’m known to be the kind of guy who takes all the Honors/APs and somehow does it without studying. Senior year, however, was horrible. I had two F’s on my midyear report and a C+; the rest were A’s. I’m surprised I even got accepted.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Stony Brook University, NYU.

General Comments: I’M PRETTY SURPRISED. WAS NOT EXPECTING ACCEPTANCES ANYWHERE REALLY BECAUSE OF MY HORRENDOUS MIDYEAR REPORT. BEST OF LUCK TO EVERYONE!

General Comments : I know list was top heavy for reaches but I was hoping they’d overlook freshman year GPA and look at improvement. Also, parents wouldn’t let me go anywhere but U of H unless it was a reach or cheaper (UTD would be cheaper than commuting to U of H). Not expecting any more acceptances but Oxy, BC, BU acceptance would be a nice surprise lol.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: there were so many qualified applicants this year and Northeastern was going to be a pretty big reach for me either way, but considering the increase in applications and the over-enrollment last year, I didn’t really expect much.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): 8.5-9/10? I asked teachers who knew me very well and I had them as my teacher last year and this year

Teacher Rec #1: History teacher. She taught me in APUSH both years and was my stand in teacher when my WHAP teacher went on maternity leave 9/10
Teacher Rec #2: Honors Biology/Current Anatomy teacher. I think we had a pretty good relationship 9/10
Counselor Rec: We talk a lot about college and because I moved to a new school junior year she was always checking up on me 9/10

State (if domestic applicant): NJ
Country (if international applicant): ------
School Type: Small public school, around 200 people in our class
Ethnicity: Chinese
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: ----
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none

Reflection

Strengths: SAT Score, recommendations, showed uptrend in grades and class rigor
Weaknesses: GPA, didn’t take many honors and AP classes as a freshman and sophomore, ECs (I transferred schools so I couldn’t continue with clubs that I was in freshman and sophomore year)

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:
I think because I was an international student for 6 years in Asia, they thought I would have a good global perspective which is good for business majors. Nothing from my application significantly stood out besides that I think. Also, by moving junior year (even though I didn’t want to) and showing improved grades, shows my ability to thrive even though I had to go through such a change for junior year. This may not have been the only reason I was accepted but it may have made my application stand out. This doesn’t apply to many other students so I don’t know how useful this information will be.

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
Accepted:
Rutgers- New Brunswick (Honors with 13k scholarship and because I’m in-state, I only have to pay for housing)
UMass Amherst (Honors with 19k scholarship)
Seton Hall University (Honors program was separate application and I didn’t apply after finding out that I got into Rutgers)
Haven’t heard back from a majority of my schools so I haven’t been rejected anywhere as of now

General Comments :
The application process is so random at times. I saw high stats and good ECs from other applicants who were rejected from the same schools that I got into. I thought that many of them were more qualified than me and yet I was accepted and they were rejected. So anyone who didn’t get the decision they wanted shouldn’t feel too bad because I’m sure you’ll end up at a great school that you’ll love!

Also, don’t be afraid to apply even if you feel intimidated by the stats of people who got in before. It doesn’t hurt to apply and if you don’t try, you may regret it in the long run

Good luck to everyone else!

Essays (rating 1-10, details): Looking back, my common app essay is a bit unorganized. Talks about what I was like in elementary school and shows how I’m still that passionate and energetic but how I have also matured (7/10).

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: APES Teacher from Sophomore year. He’s a bit disorganized, but he see’s me as a hard working and fun student. (8/10)
Teacher Rec #2: APLang Teacher from Junior year, who also taught me in 10th grade Honors English. Loves me as a person and has seen me grow in what I consider one of my weakest subjects. Went from getting a B- in her class Sophomore year to getting A’s during Junior year. (9/10)

News if that means anything?) and so I’ve had a pretty rigorous curriculum in high school that they may have thought would mean I could handle the work at Northeastern. Also possibly because I have some unique extracurriculars like scuba diving and going to the Dominican Republic.
Where else were you accepted:
-Washington State University
-University of Washington
-Deferred from Duke in ED
-Waiting on Stanford, Duke (for RD this time), USC, Northwestern, Boston U, NYU, U of Rochester

General Comments: Pleasantly surprised that I made it in! After seeing how many great individuals either were Rejected or Waitlisted I didn’t think I was going to make the cut. Very grateful to be accepted into one of my top schools!

Additional Rec: Research advisor

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: No
Intended Major: CS & CE
State (if domestic applicant): MA
School Type: Suburban Public School
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: Middle Class
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Researcher, programmer

Reflection:
I feel blessed to have gotten a lot of great guidance and advice from my research adviser, former guidance counselor (who passed away last year), family, and administrators/teachers who believed in me. My brother also had a “low” GPA and got into an Ivy League school by creating his own opportunities and being very resourceful. Remember, the schools or grades that you get into don’t define who you are. I did a lot of activities that are deemed as not helpful for getting into elite schools. For example, I wrote a lot of code and published it online, didn’t play any varsity sports, missed a year out of school due to illness and to take care of my family situation, spent two years in therapy. I got nearly straight B’s in my freshman year of high school and was lucky to create my own opportunities through reaching out to local professors and software engineers who mentored me. I’ve also gotten some C’s in my term grades and almost failed Latin. Overall, I’ve been able to get great opportunities in CS and beyond despite my “low” GPA due to my resilience, character, and resourcefulness. Most importantly, I think developing strong friendships is very important for succeeding and surviving in high school.

Strengths: Research and Awards in CS
Weaknesses: GPA, missing a year of school
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I had poor grades in my freshman year and significantly improved in sophomore, junior, and senior year in high school while taking a maximum courseload.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted to lower tier schools like UMass and some liberal arts schools. Still waiting to hear back from some other schools. Northeastern has a really good co-op program so I most likely will attend except if I miraculously get accepted to my dream school,

General Comments : Focus on getting a good GPA and being well-rounded in areas that you are truly passionate. Definitely take some courses at a local college if you have skipped some grade(s) in math or science and are passionate in those subjects.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 8-9 possibly? From History teacher who knows me really well.
Teacher Rec #2: 8-9 again, from my Biology teacher. I didn’t read them obviously, but I have a really good relationship with these teachers and I trust them to write all the points that represent me well.
Counselor Rec: 8-9, also knows me really well.
Additional Rec: none.

Other

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I honestly have no idea, expected a rejection due to my uncompetitive SAT scores.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted at UC Davis, and since I’m an international student–University of Toronto, Imperial College London, University College London, University of Manchester, University of Bristol, and the University of York. Waitlisted by University of Washington.

General Comments : I think my lower-than-average SAT scores show that NEU does not solely consider your grades, so to those who suck at the SATs like I do, fret not!

@TomSrOfBoston With a 97% Freshman retention rate, where are all of the NUin students going to live when they come back in the Spring? With upperclassmen?

@apdns19 Some students graduate after fall semester, many others leave to go on coop for the spring semester. My understanding is that NUIn students live all over campus.

A few years ago all incoming NUIn students were housed in the brand new East Village residence hall that opened in January. Some students complained that they felt a bit isolated from other students. So now they are integrated with other freshmen and sophomores.
