Northeastern Social Life

What is the social atmosphere like at Northeastern? How are the students? Parties? Campus activities? Area? Food? Greek Life?

@cooollegebound I was hoping someone else would right a huge paragraph or two and then I could just add my bits but I guess I’ll do the whole thing and someone can add to what I write.

Social Atmosphere:
This is a harder question to answer because we have around 15k students and we are all doing different things. Overall northeastern has changed since both my boss a previous northeastern alumus and my uncle went. The school has shifted and it has become very competitive and with this so has the demand from employers seeking students. Overall the social atmosphere can fall into different categories depending on your major/ interest/ future plans. We are all your regular students and most of us get along just fine. We have a lot of diversity and that really contributes to my lectures because we all learn from each other. One thing i really would like to let you know is that we all care about our studies and our future careers and most of us picked the school for the co-op and other experiential learning opportunities. The campus is in Boston and we all love the city except during the winter months. The skii club kids don’t count they take trips and snowboard during these months. The campus feels like its own area within a city this is a not a joke. We have fenway,downtown,state, and prudential and while those two spots are 10minutes walking distance or uber distance, you could spend your whole time in the campus vicinity and would be just fine.The hardest part about the social atmosphere at Northeastern is knowing that you might not see your friends every semester. You could switch colleges and have a different co-op cycle, study abroad, summer sessions, and this part sometimes sucks but it makes you a better professional in a way and also gets you to move past your comfort zone every semester. Proffesors have some much experience here and they really are there for you if you have any questions about your career or future career path. We are a community in the sense that we all go through the same struggles, co-op classes, awful reqs we deem unnecessary, bad time slots for classes (first 2 years), classes being filled, and much more. We also go through the great times like snow days, springfest, food trucks, co-op connections, clubs, as northeastern students we all understand each other and something like saying Good luck to a student prior to their interview will make their day and even calm their nerves like you have no idea because we all know what that feeling is like. Overall we have a pretty standard social atmosphere other than tailgate parties or D1 stadiums for football, but we are all career oriented and for some students that doesn’t work and that’s okay I just want you to understand this( ask me any particulars if you want as well)

Students:
There are so many different types of students here it’s really hard to narrow it down to a general description. We have jocks, we have students that party, we have lots of international students, and we students that will study at snell 24/7 and I admire that dedication. Students are all pretty understanding and the respect is mutual especially in classes where students inputs are welcomed. I would really like to say that student at northeastern, or a good amount of us are here for jumping into our field as soon as possible and really work hard in trying to figure out what we want to do in the future. I will like to say that we are a campus filled with diversity and i have yet to have had a problem in getting along with anyone in classes. Group projects are pretty standard here so you learn to work with each other and lots of times you will run into your group members again. If you have any specifics on us students in particular please let me know I’m trying to give you a basic run down.

Parties:
Okay, so i’ll be blunt, freshman year will be tough depending on the type of student that you are and there is nothing wrong with this. Some students do not party at all and will study and dedicate their time to clubs and co-op and their career development 24/7. There is nothing wrong with this. As a freshman you are really constricted in the sense your dorms are small, and its not like you can throw a kegger in the common area, but if you do join a frat or a sorority maybe an upper class man will take you under their wing which is cool. As you progress you will find out that off campus northeastern apartments (as well as some of the upper class man suites) are where most of the parties are held, but it’s all about networking and making connection. We won’t be out there advertising location and time with flyers ( lols) so getting out there and making friends your freshman year will help. The whole getting out there and doing this can take some time for some students so don’t be discouraged. As a sophomore you are considered an upper class man and if you pull a good lottery number with your friends you can get an apartment style selection and from there I’d like to say its all traditional partying :). I constantly mess with my friend about this because I don’t think he realizes Sundays are not Fridays especially when we both have a 9AM. (ask me any specific questions about this if you want as well)

@cooollegebound
Campus activities:
If it’s sports we have hockey and basketball as our major two, not football so there are no tailgates per say, but there are parties.We have fall fest which is a huge event in which all the clubs table around campus and you can sign up and get cool stuff which makes it a good social gathering especially as an incoming freshman. We have spring fest too which is a huge event in which an artist comes to marino to perform. The biggest issue you will find at northeastern and as a college student is trying to fit in so many activities or events into your schedule. I am currently in three different clubs and juggling that along with school and the co-op semesterly search which sometimes sucks especially during midterm week and finals week. I would just like to say that there is always something that you can be a part of. I would like to add there are so many events during the fall and late spring and summer that I would sometimes just walk around trying to see what was happening and I lucked out with barbecues all the time.

Area:
So oddly enough people thing that the school is small, which in my opinion it is not because most buildings are built in the sense of conserving as much green space or common space as possible. My favorite spot is behind curry center chilling on the grass where the pond and the fish are which I don’t know where they go during the winter. We are so close to the city it’s crazy as a lower classman before you are 21, the school campus will most likely be your home after that the events in the city are endless. Not to say that you can’t just go to frog pond and skate with your friend, because clubs do organize these events. There are so many restaurants and stores nearby it’s crazy. The downtown is a $4 uber ride away. There is so much to say about being a school inside a city that I would prefer you ask questions. Patriots parade was awesome my friends and I all went, and I don’t welcome NY fans lols not like I’d fight anyone but dang that Eli why… , you will argue with your friends about the best restaurants and spots to go too. We are all very foody ( don’t think this is a word) because of the city. The campus is pretty awesome because lots of our events are held within our boundaries so they are our events and that makes it feel just like a regular college except we are in the city.

Greek Life:
Okay so we have this thing call an underwear run, don’t ask but its a frat thing during parents welcome week (sorry parents), and you will have a big brother assigned and in a sorority you will have a big sister. There will be events and social gatherings and this is standard among all types of greek life. That’s all i really know from personal experience and events held, the only downer is that we don’t have specific houses like other colleges and that’s the main difference. You would understand how hard it would be for the school to give each frat/sorority their own building in the city that cost millions of dollars. Overall they are all involved around campus in some way and throw parties and if that’s what you want it is available.

Food:
Okay so I left this last because I care about this very much. I would like to say we have pretty awesome dining and choice available, stir fry station in stetson west, gluten free food, swipes are all you can eat, and we all seek restaurants in the area that we all love. Rebecca’s and Amelias are my favorite on campus dining dollars/dining services. Personally Tenoch is the best Mexican restaurant in the city and I have had to take many people there to prove it :). The food choices at northeastern is one of the reasons I joined the FITNU club, i needed it if i wanted to keep my love for food going. We get dining dollars with our meal plan which vary in price ( word of advice nobody needs 19, 15 max 10 is what most students carry) and 90% of the dining dollars goes to food/coffe. We have a dunkin donuts and Starbucks here, and please try the caramel macchiato if you’ve never had dunkin donuts coffee before it’s a must. We have a popeyes, burger place, pizza/pasta place, wings, amelias, rebeccas,qdoba, and more I just can’t remember all of them. If you have any questions about the food life just know you are in good hands and i have never heard anyone complain. All these places are on campus except tenoch, so just think about the food life outside the campus unlimited options.

I would like to finalize this by saying this has been my experience so far and the experience of my friends, every student is different and every college experience is different. In college you get what you put in and that’s a general rule in life. If there are any other opinions about the campus life or experience here at northeastern I welcome them I am 1 out of 15k but i did try to give both sides of the coin and what you will encounter here at northeastern. If you have any questions feel free to ask :). ( any grammar errors please forgive me so much to write)

@cooollegebound

Had this bookmarked to respond to the above, but I don’t really see any need to add to that lol. Nice job @raulhumber2 lol. I generally agree, but again, as said, there are very diff types of students at Northeastern.

I don’t usually do chance threads, but I just want to make sure you don’t get bad info or get your hopes too high. With your scores, NEU will be a reach. You’ve got a solid GPA and good activities, and certainly have a chance, but I wouldn’t get attached. Admission truly is holistic, but the lower the test scores, the more you will need to stand out in other ways, and that’s something that will be done in your essay and the picture you paint as an applicant on the whole.

Good luck of course!

Cooooollegebound let us know how it turns out ! Best of Luck…

@lmjdad1I definitely will!

@Imjdad1 I definitely will!

Just interested, did you get in?

nope :frowning: @yeeezussss

Sorry! Did you apply for nu.in also? Because I know a student with lower stats than you and got into that program. And honestly my stats aren’t that much different from yours either except my act is 34 superscored, but my gpa is around the same unweighted and I took 7 AP classes also. However, I got in with 20k merit. Very interesting
