@suzyQ7 I wouldn’t worry about the ACT writing at all. It’s too much a mess to be taken seriously by any thoughtful school.
I didn’t want to start a new thread but Northeastern has published mid 50% stats for enrolled Fall 2016 students:
3.9-4.4 out of 5.0
HS GPA
31-34
ACT
2010-2200
Combined
SAT Score
1440-1540
Redesigned SAT*
*Redesigned SAT ranges are based on concordance for prior year scores.
@TomSrOfBoston Where was it published? Stats are similar to 2015
@TomSrOfBoston is that ACT mid 50% superscored? And does Northeastern’s gpa weighting tend to be significant (i.e. same as or higher than one’s high school weighting)?
@LkL5789 On the admissions website. Stats are only likely to increase slightly in the future.
@peopleperson1 Northeastern and all colleges recompute WGPA based on its own formula.
@TomSrOfBoston Ok, well, I hope that ACT range is from superscoring. Gulp.
The weighted GPA is the toughest to interpret. Even with NEU recalculating on their own scale, there are many high schools that have few AP offerings, or may have non-honors language or history offerings that would bring down the calculated WGPA - even if the student has straight As (since an honors A is +.5 and an AP A is + 1.0). I know they factor all this in their admission process, but wonder how they account for these discrepancies in these statistics and in awarding honors and merit based on GPA.
Test scores are more clean cut.
Their stats just keep on rising… I feel like three years ago NEU would have been a match for me, and now it’s become a little bit of a reach.
now I really am curious if that mid 50% range for ACT is the superscore. Does anyone know?
@peopleperson1 : I assume it would have to be, they do their own calculations of all ACT scores and GPAs; since they report the GPA that they themselves calculate, I’m sure they do the same for the ACT.
It wouldn’t make sense to list the score they aren’t considering for admission.
thanks @marijke, I hope so!
@marijke Don’t they already let us upload a resume on the Common Application?
@Avancer Yeah they do. I guess we won’t know for sure until someone applies and tells us. I’m applying in like two weeks so if no one has done so already, ill let everyone know.
I have my scores ready. I just have some edits to do on my essay, I’m thinking around one or two weeks before I submit.
@marijke You broke the news about this supplement here on CC. How did you become aware of it? You posted the email from admissions but what prompted you to inquire?
@TomSrOfBoston : I attended an information session this summer at NEU and they said that for the first time this year, they were going to allow a supplement (but gave no more details and when I started my application I saw nothing). I addressed this briefly in the copy of the first email I copied into this discussion.
My daughter just submitted her application to Northeastern and there isn’t any mention of a supplemental essay.
@carolinesmom Thank you. What we’ve been told is that when you log into the myneu account (Northeastern’s portal) -after you submit your app through the common app- the supplement or question will be there. Did your daughter get a chance to log into the NEU portal yet?
I’ve been able to confirm: There is no supplement in the normal sense - there is a place where you can submit additional materials, such as a resume, portfolio, or relevant projects. One of these could be a writing sample, of course.
That’s disappointing, but I’m glad to know that I can put together a writing sample to sent to them.
Thank you guys SO much!
