Northeastern Supplement Essay?

@PengsPhils is there a spot for Slideroom portfolios?

@MotherOfDragons

I don’t know all the details for CAMD, but I believe many Art majors are required to submit portfolios, and most are highly recommended if not required. This is in addition to that already available part.

After glancing through that, they explicitly mention Slideroom, so yes. That is not new this year either.

Would we be able to submit a resume and a short writing piece about our interest in Northeastern?

Thanks for that info, @PengsPhils . It says “Portfolios to majors outside of the College of Arts, Media and Design will not be reviewed in the admission process”, so for her (CS major, lots of animatronics projects), I don’t think they’ll allow her to upload it in the additional info section.

I believe the common app already has aditional materials section - so not sure what is new this year. Sounds like they intended to add some sort of supplement to the NEU portal but didn’t have enough time to get it rolled out. I’m guessing they are very busy with whatever big changes they have in store for the honors program.

I will share with this thread any info we find out at the NU Preview event on 10/15.

@suzyQ7, my daughter and I looked up and down that portal specifically looking for the supplemental essay, but didn’t see anything other than what @PengsPhils has mentioned.

Please keep us posted on that NU Preview event.

From Preview Day, I can confirm there is no additional essay (as @carolinesmom already mentioned) but there is an option to submit ‘additional materials’ in the NU Portal after submitting the common app. This gives you a chance to submit something you think is missing or that NEU in particular would want to see (vs adding it as a supplement through the common app).

What do you guys think would be a good thing to submit just to show my interest in Northeastern?

If you have relevant experience, a resume is a great thing to add in my opinion.

When my daughter was applying to colleges 5 years ago we made the decision to add a resume to the common app. She had a unique EC that was difficult to describe in the common app form and so the resume “added value” by describing that. You should only add things to your application if they “add value” by describing something not already in your application, or telling a story that your application doesn’t already tell, etc. If you submit something extra just to submit something it will not be looked upon as a positive.

Tufts used to have a supplemental question that was do something on a 8 x 10 paper and send it to us. They got lots of origami etc. This was clearly a show us you are creative question (they got rid of this about 5 years ago). I don’t think Northeastern is looking for a creative entry just trying to give you a chance to give them everything you think they need to make an educated decision.

I would agree that a resume should be the default option, particularly if it allows you to elaborate on an activity, job/internship that the Common Ap does not allow you to adequately describe.

Another option could be a piece of schoolwork that you are particularly proud of.
